Chillingham castle

We went to see the castle. It was ok. Very cluttered place. There is also on the grounds the oldest cattle breed. Which are wild and you can have a tour to see them.

Has been in the same family almost 900 hundred years, it became dererlict. but the present owner bought it for his wife so the line could continue. The restoration is probably almost complete and is magnificent. The torture chamber is not for the faint hearted, it is not easy going with anyone with limited ability, but with effort it is... My husband and I visited Chillingham Castle as part of our trip to Northumberland. I had a booked a 'ghost tour'. We were a little disappointed. I've read other reviews and I had to agree that half the castle is filled with junk which doesn't seem to relate to the castle's history. The paranormal team seemed to be profiteering from... More

For those wanting the National Trust style presentation of a historic house this may not be the place for you. However I felt it was so good to see a place with so many historic artefacts displayed in a very different way. The owner obviously is a keen to display many unusual items within the castle and I feel it... More

This is one man's vision to restore a much neglected castle and fill it with his treasures. Some are marvellous, others junk, but a torrent of things pours through every room and spills out onto every stair. Hugely eclectic, often shabby, the contents give real character to the grand old house, and I wandered round with a big grin on... More

First visited several years ago and I doubt much has changed. Not well signposted round the lanes and nothing at entrance to car park so not surprising that there were not many visitors. Good cake in the tea room. Room guides enthusiastic and informative. No ghostly experiences as it was mid afternoon when I was there

20 miles from Embleton. Opens at 12. About £9 per person. Really interesting and querky. Lovely and strange. Compact castle. The collection of the Wakefield family. Good dungeon. Really good tea room with huge open fire. No dogs though. Have been several times. And it's meant to be haunted. Has that feel when you walk into small entrance area.

I came across Chillingham almost by chance. I am very glad I took the time to visit. It is a private property and, as such, does not suffer from National Trust uniformity. It is filled with an eclectic collection of artefacts put together by the owner. His instruments of torture were a speciality. The tea room was also very good... More

A shame but the castle appears very neglected and the grounds are in a poor condition. There is a decent cafe but we spent most of our time in there after a tour of the castle. needs an injection of tlc.r

It is amazing what the current owner has done to bring this castle back to some semblance of order but it is a bit of a work-in-progress. Exhibits are interesting but are a hotpotch of items lumped together. Beware the dungeon where grizzly sights and descriptions of torture and death await. I was left in amazement at what kind of...
