Behind the unobtrusive facade of Millgate House at the bottom of Richmond's Georgian Market Square lies one of the most suprising gardens in the North of England. The garden won first prize out of 3200 entries in the R H S National Garden Competition and is now a Royal Horticultural Society's "Recommended Garden". It is described in the Good Gardens Guide as "a gem""a delightful garden...skilful underplanting...never feels contrived...just natural and generous...it is a wonderful education in the handling of a small space." The garden has been featured in magazines all over the world.A recent article in the Sunday Times said..."the most densely planted garden I have ever seen." The praise is fulsome...don't miss this garden whilst in Richmond. Many return again and again at different seasons. Open Daily 10 00 am til 5 00pm April til Oct Entrance £2 00

we discovered these wonderful gardens by accident and so glad we had.It is not mammoth but very steep and the plants are fantastic especially for early October in North Yorkshire.Iwas so impressed as was my wife.We would both go back again particularly at mid summer if possible

It's always tricky visiting gardens in late September, it takes a lot of work to keep it looking good late into the season. We thought that it looked wonderful, with a super atmosphere and feeling. The alley way - a very poor description of it - was absolutely super, a lesson in how to turn a path / alley into... More

What a very encouraging review.... and from an N G S garden owner too! We like to think that one contributing factor to Millgate House being outstanding is the added bonus of the garden which guests can take full advantage of whilst staying. It is a marvellous plus to be able to wander round the garden in the early morning... More

Even if you're not interested in gardening you should see this amazing oasis in the behind a townhouse in the middle of Richmond. It won A best guarded in Britain award a few years ago and you will see why. The garden is brilliant and the succession planting keeps it fresh all year long. A total joy to wander around.

We stayed at the Millgate House for a few nights and explored the garden one morning. Wonderful English Gardens with alcoves to sit and contemplate. You can see the work on this garden, when you look over the fence at the others. Appreciate the English Garden, which while it takes great work, makes it look to simple and natural --... More

I'm not a gardener at all but even I could appreciate the sheer volume and quality of the planting. If you know your stuff, this place must be a treasure trove - and if you don't, well, it's simply beautiful to behold.

Second visit to this beautiful garden and it's a joy to wander round, with a great variety of plants, colour, foliage. Easy to see why it is award winning and highly respected by well-known horticulturists.

Tucked away behind an Alice in Wonderland door just off the market place this is an incredible garden. Every inch is packed with wonderful plants and it has the feel of a tropical jungle as you approach down the narrow path lined with hostas and other plants - and barely a slug hole to be seen! Seats are placed at... More

We have been staying at the house for a few days now and have to say it really has an exceptional garden, We have been fortunate enough to see it in great sunny weather and also in wet misty weather and it is well worth seeing on both occasions. You have to get this garden when you come in to... More

Wow! Quite a review... you were clearly not underwhelmed! But overwhelmed! Praise indeed coming from a Gold Medalist botantical painter, with an eye for a good garden and four Chelsea Golds. You have seen what there is to be seen here...unlike some who pass through with a glancing eye and dismiss! We do feel there are many botanical treasures here... More

This walled town garden, tucked away behind the busy marketplace, is one of Richmond's treasures. It's packed with interesting plants and I visit regularly, as it changes throughout the year. There are lots of seating areas allowing you to take in the colours and scents and to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It is one of my favourite gardens and I... More

It is very good to get some positive feed back after the rather negative comments about the garden being "underwhelming" yesterday. It made us feel that we should close the garden when such negative people come in...but then hundreds of others are , like you, so enthusiastic. An American guest staying with us for three days was incandescent with anger... More
