About Kent & East Sussex Railway
The K&ESR opened in 1900 as England’s first ‘light railway’, serving the rural communities of East Sussex and Kent. Closing to passengers in 1954, the line was saved and reopened by a charitable organisation in 1974. It now operates steam hauled and diesel observation trains on a 10.5 mile line from Bodiam Castle in East Sussex to the historic market town of Tenterden in west Kent.

We arrived on spec and discovered there was a 1940s event that day. There were lots of people dressed up, music and stalls selling vintage items. This was at both Tenterden and Bodium stations. We took the steam train from Tenterden to Bodium and back again. The carriage has been adapted to carry wheelchairs and mobility scooters and the train was also dog friendly. There was also a toilet on board. The line isn’t particularly scenic but you do get a good view of Bodium castle through the trees

Visited whilst on holiday. Bit of a drive from where we were staying, but worth it. Journey is through some scenic country. We had a steam hauled trip. Friendly staff/volunteers who all seemed to enjoy what they were doing and were always helpful. Seats aren't bookable, so advisable to turn up early for any of the trains

We were 6 people including my mum who has a new knee and hip and her friend in a wheelchair - so the train is a good day out for everyone - we drove to Tendeden and took the steam train to Bodium - it was a lovely trip - there is a carriage that caters for wheelchairs which made it even better :) Fun ticket inspector lady volunteer - so funny - made us laugh. We always try to support the railways wherever we go

A lovely, gentle time riding across fields with great views. Friendly and informed staff who are always polite. A good exhibition at Tenterden Station. Bodium castle is just a 10 min walk from the Bodium station.
