Climb the tower and enjoy amazing views
Aug 2021
During the summer months (April through September) the Church Tower is open to visitors.

The church is positioned at the top of a really tall hill with stunning views over the surrounding countryside.

Opening hours for the church tower vary (the church is always open), but it costs just £3 and is well worth the climb. I would highly recommend it.

Historic church and churchyard
Jun 2020 • Couples
Goudhurst is a delightful village full of historic buildings going back to the 14th century. It perhaps has two points of focus - the village pond and St Mary's Church, joined by the High Street.

The church is closed due to health crisis, but it was enjoyable to explore the exterior and the graveyard with the old gravestones, dating from the 17th to the early 20th century, so weathered by many years of rain, wind and sun that you can hardly read the inscriptions. Fortunately a good record has been made of them at different times over the years as some have disappeared completely and this is available on the web.

The church was founded in 1170 by Robert de Crevecour and inevitably it has been altered and restored many times over the centuries. Its spire was destroyed by lightning in 1637 and the stonework of the tower was restored a yeat later.

The church stands on a hill and the tower apparently provides excellent views of the surrounding countryside and was used as a surveying location for the Anglo-French Survey of 1784–1790 to measure the distance between the Paris Observatory and the Royal Greenwich Observatory.

Around the church is a variety of old buildings including weavers' cottages dating from about 1350 and the Star & Eagle, also dating back to the 14th century, all worth exploring on foot.

Well worth a visit
Nov 2019
Set on a hilltop with amazing views of the surrounding countryside from its tower, St Mary's Church is a landmark visible from miles around. The first record of a church in Goudhurst comes from 1119. Over the centuries the church was enlarged and extended until it became the present-day church. Until 1637, the church's tower was topped by an 115ft high tower. However, in that year the spire was hit by lightning and the spire and tower were destroyed. Inside, the church is full of the monuments and memorials to local dignitaries. A beautiful church it is well worth a visit.

Beautiful church in glorious Kent countryside

Every time we visit Goudhurst, my partner pops into St Marys Church. A lovely old church, she has reliably informed me this is where she wants to get married one day (better start saving then).

Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
