About
Built by the order of King Henry VIII it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles. Today you can explore the whole of the castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Take a walk around the defences and admire the squat, rounded bastions and cannons.

Parking fines
Oct 2021
Be aware that though you may have a membership with English Heritage, you are still required to get a ticket at the parking machine. The instructions on entry to the car park are charmingly vague, and you will be fined a further £25 for the pleasure of parking at Deal Castle.

Bigger than I thought !

This is an interesting example of an east coast defensive castle.

There was lots of tunnels to explore in the basement level, but no information boards to indicate what would of once been there / used for etc. The tunnels had a one-way system in place due to Covid-19.

There was some information on the ground floor of the castle, and some children's activities available on the ground floor.

We probably spent about 30-40 minutes here.

Great castle, historically important. A great view of seafront and beach. Very atmospheric inside. Has a small cafe.

Beware parking spoiler
Sep 2021
A simpler version of nearby Walmer Castle, and usually less busy. A modestly good experience, spoiled by seeing how other English Heritage members were being stung with parking fines. This was because a ticket (free) is now supposed to be obtained from the pay machine. The staff claimed that there were adequate signs, but they were not at all adequate. We only came away unscathed because we happened to see the parking attendant on arrival and asked him for directions and instructions. Frankly, it is scandalous.

Wouldn’t bother.

Our ‘free’ trip as English heritage members ended up costing us a £25 parking fine. In no other English heritage sites have we been required to purchase extra tickets so we didn’t realise, staff could also be prompted to make this clear on arrival. The castle isn’t very impressive, not worth the fine, go to Walmer instead, get yourself some free parking, a decent castle and lovely grounds.

Good day trip

Enjoyed our trip to Deal Castle great views of the sea and town and the basement was great to explore. Lots to see for a smaller castle abs convenient parking. Thought the whole story of the castle could have been explained better through a leaflet or trail. The castle clearly has a lot of history and this could all be joined up really well to improve the visitor experience.

Really interesting but a bit pricey
Aug 2021 • Friends
Really interesting but a little bit pricey as there isn’t that much to see to reflect the cost. I appreciate that admissions go towards the upkeep but they should reflect the attraction. In reality this is something that looks better from the outside and a distance. I did enjoy it though and would recommend it

Fun to roam

I visited here after Walmer castle. Great place to wander about, lots of passages in the basement and not too many exhibits. Very handy as is close to the beach and fish and chips! :)
