We went to see the machinery working and were not disappointed. The website showed that the children’s rides were operating and our three year old grandson had four rides on the merry-go-rounds and watched with interest as the water tank on the showman’s engine was refilled with water. All this to the cheery music of the organ! But the real hit of the day was the steam roller, most impressive. You could go for a ride on the trailer. He was thrilled to pull the steam whistle at the steam farm and watched the steam driven saw at work. There were several engines working in various places. He also had a good look at the line up of vintage tractors. The enthusiasm of the volunteers was a pleasure to see and the day ended with a ride on the steam train. We felt it was a good day out at the end of the season and would be happy to go again, given that all this was included in the price.

Where do I start, we were so excited to see Hollycombe had opened its gates again, we decided to pay a visit and pre-booked online, here is the first problem you use to buy a annual ticket now the same price for just one day! Nothing on the website to say that the main fairground was shut! It shows clearly what is there so my second point, some pathetic little rides only suitable for young children, non running on steam, very very disappointed and angry. Food well that's overpriced for what you get, seriously what is happening?
Lot's of stuff under cover, bit like a junk yard, the ride takes you round what is junk on display, the farm was underwhelming with a few displays, not worth visiting.
We won't be returning, think long and hard before you go, it's a waste of time and money

Such a disappointment! We have always visited Hollycombe and the kids were so excited that it had reopened. The tickets however were not the normal annual pass that they have been previously, I was reluctant to spend so much for just a 1 off visit but decided to go anyway as it's always been so fun. When we arrived there were only a handful of rides open and these were suitable for 4 and under at a push. The only thing ok for us was the ghost house, miniature railway, steam roller (not really the fun rides the kids were expecting) which was extremely expensive in comparison to the ticket prices. I feel we should have been told before going that most of the rides were not up and running (carousel, big wheel etc). Not happy and felt it was seriously overpriced for what was on offer.

Not really what I expected. There was none of the rides that I have seen advertised or in photos online. No carousel, wheel or swing boats or anything like that. They only had rides for very young children. And of those there was only 4 of them. Suitable for my 3 year old but none for my 8 year old. And none of these rides were steam powered.
The train and traction engine rides were steam powered and really lovely engines, but the route they take is through a very messy estate. Lots of dumped things, stuff covered in tarpaulins and run down old caravans. Like a tour of a fly tipped area.
There was a farm area, but it consisted of a single shed with a few machines in it. No information about what any of them did.
The best part by far was the miniature railway. This went through the only part of the whole place that was well kept and tidy.
There was only portable toilets - which weren’t the cleanest, lot of wasps around and the fairground snacks were cash only.
This was the first time I had visited despite only living half an hour away, but I don’t think I’d return.

Disappointing visit as all the rides are for very small children. Nothing there for over 6 year old however this is not mentioned on the website when booking. The site is full of decaying metal and things under cover. Water wheel is one of the attractions but is covered up. Sad to see a peacock in a tiny cage too. Not the steam fair I remember visiting as a child.

Dear Ruth, We are very sorry to read that your visit was disappointing. Covid-19 presented us with the opportunity to undertake in-depth, ongoing maintenance on some of our fairground rides. We made the decision in July to open with a reduced offering and we were extremely careful to advertise clearly the extent of our offering on both our website and on the ticket booking site. For children over 6 years old we have steam-hauled trailer rides, narrow-gauge railway, garden railway, gardens, our steam farm and the haunted house but not as you say, the larger fairground rides which we accept many people associate with a visit to Hollycombe. Our juvenile peacock, Bob, was hand-reared by a volunteer. He is very nervous of crowds and the cage is a temporary measure whilst there are visitors on site. The 2 older males have no such issues with visitors and we hope Bob will mature with the same temperament but should this not be the case then we will take appropriate steps to ensure he is secure and happy. A larger area of land has already been identified as suitable should we need it. The waterwheel is being worked on by one of our volunteers and whilst unsightly, covering it up does allow a dry working space to protect the waterwheel until the work is complete. Our volunteers have worked incredibly hard over the past 18 months to keep Hollycombe alive. We are hopeful to return bigger and better next year but our steps at present are tentative due to such uncertain times. Again, please accept our apologies that your visit was disappointing. We hope to welcome you again when our bigger fair re-opens. Kind regards Lucy Twynham, General Manager

It's lovely to go somewhere that is genuinely just doing its thing without trying to sap every last ££ from your wallet..our kinds loved this, its not big, hugely impressive but its full of colour and old school excitement. Our 5 year old adored the steam fayre and took huge interest in the technology of yesteryear all manned by eager and knowledgeable volunteers. The cafe was very reasonable and the best thing is that once you've paid once you can come back anytime....

It's refreshing to go to a place that isn't forever pushing overpriced tatt to the kids during the visit too or herding you into a shop to do the same - It's a fun place and you'll still be smiling when you leave!

Really like hollycombe - unfortunately there were only 4 rides open when we went but they did have a fire eater which was a great display - it’s 17 pound which I think is top end of what they should charge but you can go back as many times in a year and I’d go again (when it’s open, only weekends and school holidays and totally shut in winter, understandably) so I don’t mind paying

We go at least twice in the summer to Hollycombe . I have four grandchildren teenagers to toddlers and they all love to go there . So good to see them enjoying the beautiful old fashioned carousels and big wheel. The ghost house is their favourite.

We visited here last night. The whole night was for Halloween, everyone including visitors were all dressed up.
I had never been before, and had no idea why.
Firstly staff are great, they really make an effort with everyone. My favourite person there, the man who plays the piano during the steam cinema. He was brilliant and so talented.
The whole place is amazing, beautiful and good old fashioned fun. Seeing everything run by steam engines is amazing. And visiting in the dark was so much fun.
Prices for food and drinks were very good too.
I will definitely go back.

Thank you for your kind review. All the staff you encountered are volunteers and that's why they are so dedicated and knowledgeable. Hollycombe is brilliant at any time of year but there is definitely some extra magic when it's dark and everything sparkles just a little bit more!
