About
With a fascinating historical background and after being preserved in 1998, Pyramiden is now our Arctic time-machine back to USSR, a piece of land surrounded by magnificent natural landscapes with mountains and valleys. Here you will have a unique chance to immerse into the atmosphere of the Soviet period, visit buildings well-saved after this time, hear the stories of then and now, and even see a movie screening in the northernmost film stock cinema via refurbished original cine-projectors. Anyone who has spent in Pyramiden at least a couple of hours makes a point in this place's extraordinary essence. Today the town "frozen in time" is open and it grows as a tourist location with a cozy hotel and restaurant where the interior has been kept in original decorations from the Soviet period. In 1995 and 2018 King Harald V and Queen Sonja visited Pyramiden and came by the restaurant for a short coffee break.

Was here on a day trip from Longyearbyen.
Russia's northernmost city, the semi-abandoned mining village of Pyramiden, is located in a small bay surrounded by glaciers.
The pyramid meets us with a stele on which the name of the village is written in two languages, Russian and Norwegian.
At the bottom is a trolley filled with coal with the inscription: "On March 31, 1998, this last ton of coal from the Pyramid mine was issued."
Everything "the northernmost in Russia" is located here - the northernmost monument to Lenin, a lawn, etc.
The red granite bust is set on a high concrete pedestal in front of the local House of Culture.
You will not surprise a former resident of the USSR with this village, you are simply transported in time to distant childhood.

In our opinion this was the most disspointed tour we have seen in our Svalbard trip. It is an ugly town where you have to spent 2! hours with a pro-russian guide. You are not allowed (which is completely normal) to stroll around yourself. The guide said she loved questions, but not if you ask question about the russian relations. Everything is a bit trashed, group was way too big. Next time we would love to stay on the boat to spot wildlife or to get the option to do a hike in the surroundings. Like one of our guides said on earlier tours, why would you visit one of the most beautiful places on earth to visit one of the most ugly places on earth. For us it was absolutely terrible. The guide did not even checked if she had the whole group, while it must have been pretty clear we were playing soccer inside the sportshall.

Super guided tour. The tourguid was from Ukraine, she had good controll off the history. Speaking English very well. Tours went in to the buildings. The tour ended in the library where you can buy easy food, drinks and sovuniers. Recommend theirs local beer "Pyramiden" Card only as payment.

This was my fourth stay in Pyramiden-and this place get better for each time I come there!.
And-now there is 4G coverage in Pyramiden (Telenor network),so those that does not own a satphone Can get a more safe and comfortable stay there.
The hotel has expanded its restaurant and bar-so it Can handle even more guests.
And there is now also a café at the culture building where you Can enjoy coffee, tea, beer from Barentsburg-and of course Vodka!.
The Cinema has also re-opened after 20 years-so now it is also possible to watch a movie there.
The rooms in the hotel are all fully renovated-and even better than the ones in Longyearbyen-and the price for staying there is a bargain compared to what you pay in Longyearbyen.
I never get tired of visiting this place-it is pure magic!.
Try to get the permission to rent a rifle at the Sysselmannen homepage-and rent one before you go to Pyramiden. Then you Will have the full Freedom to Explore this wonderfull place!!!.

I made a boat tour Fjord-cruise towards Nordenskiöld Glacier & Pyramiden with Henningsen Transport & Guiding. Such surprising feeling when you visiting this place. You feel like on the movie set, because everything looks like everybody just left for a lunch break. Place you should totally visit if you are going to Svalbard. Boat trip brings you amazing and breath taking views as well. For the glacier and the mountains. Perfect day out and for sure to remember for a long time.

The ghost town of Pyramiden makes you feel like you have entered an area after some huge catastrophe. The place is taken care of, more and more people gain interest in it, but you can feel like you are in a really isolated location. There are still buildings left in the shape they were when people still lived there and believed some day they might be back (equipeed with everyday objects). There is a bar, still operating, where they sell beer produced in Barentsburg - the only place where you can taste it. You can also buy some souvenirs there, for example T-shirts with USSR logo. You must be accompanied by a guide with a gun when walking around. This is the closest town to the glacier and the risk of encountering a polar bear there is much higher than in Longyearbyen or Barentsburg.

Pyramiden was the final stop of our boat trip with Henningsen's travel. It's an abandoned Russian mining town where about 12 people live. The tour is a walking tour around town with a very informative guide, taking about 2 hours. Definitely worth a visit.
