Visited Alum Creek State Park in December; not the best time to enjoy all the recreational opportunities, including water sports, available at this State Park.  But, I stopped at three salient features of the park- the Beach (campgrounds), the Visitor Center, and the Dam.  Each place has its own parking area.  Walked on the concrete paved trail in the beach area, and then hiked to the Visitor Center (closed due to the pandemic).  Then went to the dam parking area and walked on the paved trail up to the dam.  Enjoyed the view of the water flow at the dam.  The dam trail continues for about three miles east but it is not paved.  Also, there are several unpaved hiking trails both upstream and downstream of the dam, but they were too wet or iced up during my visit.  Alum Creek State Park would be well worth the visit when the weather is good to enjoy all the recreational options available at the park.

I was looking for a place to take a nice walk before flying home from Columbus. A friend recommended this park and it was a great choice. Just off I-71 it was easy to access and I had a really nice walk. I really had no idea where within the park I should go, and my car's GPS was going to send me in along Lackey Old State Rd. Because of a detour I ended up heading down Africa Road off of Highway 36 instead. The first turn into the park from that road was a boat launch, which had no trails, but the second was an access point for a mountain bike trail, which was perfect. It was mid-day on a Monday and during my walk I saw two mountain bikers and two other hikers. I imagine that on a weekend you'd need to be watching out for more bicyclists, since the trail is really meant for them. The woods were lovely and shady. The trail was well marked and a nice mixture of short ups and down. It was a hot day, so also very nice to stick my feet in the water after my walk and splash some lake water onto my face and neck.

Very nice state park campground. Grounds were in good shape thought the bath facilities are showing their age. Stayed at L14 and L15. These were listed as Premium Lake View sites. No one has seen the lake from these sights in at least six years. There are few sites in this campground that are on the water with a view. Still, the campground sites are well maintained and well prepared for RVs or tents.

We usually love state parks to camp in but this one gets a thumbs down from us. We had requested and told we would be given a spot with trees but instead, pulled in (with 100 plus heat index outside) to our assigned lot with ZERO tree coverage. The lot next to us could have handled our 35ft RV but we were told it was not available. It remained empty even into the next morning as we left. Bathroom shelter houses are spaced too far and few inbetween and not maintained. As I said, we stay in state parks all over the US and this is one has landed on our NO list.
