the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is a museum where people can sit in the historic carriages; enter the driver's cabins of the various locomotives and marvel at the rolling stock in the 1926 built roundhouse and admire the still functioning turntable what has all 3 gauges. Steamtown is ideal for families and is pet friendly also. Stay the night in Peterborough and attend the stunning sound and Light show that tells the story of the creation of Peterborough, about railways in South Australia and the history and personal stories associated with it and the linking of East Australia to West Australia

This was an incredible place to visit! The trains may no longer run but all tell their story! We learnt so much from our time at Steamtown. The highlights were the Sound & Light show with the amazing Tamara and our tour with the wonderful Phil. You both shared your passion & energy & our two Thomas the Tank Engine... More

It was a very interesting tour, just the right length and amount of information along with being able to walk through lots of carriages of various trains.

Very interesting tour, followed by the very special Light Show. Peterborough has many attractions, not least the history involving our first Australian Saint, Mary McKillop. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 day stay there and highly recommend it to others. The trip over the Flinders Ranges to Port Augusta was beautiful too.

Worth stopping a day and night to see. Shound and light show at night goes for an hour, Daytime tour by Phil lasted over an hour. Phil knows lots about trains and was very interesting. I learnt a lot. A better train experience than the Qld Ipswich train museum

The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre has books, brochures, cards and souvenirs for sale and we bought a few items. The lady serving us was knowledgeable, helpful, courteous and friendly. A real asset to the place. We did the Light & Sound Tour one evening thinking it was going to be something more than what it was... We had a look... More

Had a lovely day visiting all the old locos and rolling stock. The guide Colin was full of information and we could tell he just loved his work. Make sure you also go to the light ad sound show after dark it is very informative.

We were welcomed the minute we stepped into the Steamtown shop/ information desk. My husband and I were included in the final tour of the day and our tour guide Judith was passionate about the trains and extremely knowledgeable. The 90 minute tour allowed us time to scramble aboard steam engines and carriages and to relive the bygone days of... More

We had a tour around Steamtown with an extremely knowledgeable, friendly and funny guide called Judith. The place was well set out and we thoroughly enjoyed looking in the old trains and carriages.

Enthusiastic people make these visits enjoyable. We had trouble booking online for Light and Sound show. Advised full. Lucky we asked and managed to get in. Best option is to ring to book. Show worthwhile. I am no rail enthusiast but loved the history of it all.
