Home to the largest single collection of free flying birds in Australia (some 500 of them!), Birdworld Kuranda in the Australian highlands of the Atherton Tablelands displays no less than 75 species of the most spectacular birds from all corners of the planet - as well as from the earth’s fast diminishing rainforests.Visitors are free to wander through the lush, tropically landscaped bird sanctuary to observe the birds in their own specific - yet natural - habitats. Two lakes connected by a tumbling waterfall for example are home to waterbirds such as stilts, herons and Australia’s own unique Black Swan. In Birdworld's rainforest canopy overhead, blue, gold and scarlet Macaws dazzle with colourful brilliance as they soar above the tree tops. One outstanding Birdworld denizen not to be missed is that rare avian giant, the Cassowary - an Australian bird now officially enlisted as endangered.Designed to "create a centre where birds would be showcased in their natural environment without the barriers of cages coming between them and their admiring public", Birdworld Kuranda is a photographer's paradise. (And without those barriers, visitors often find a feathered friend nestling on their shoulder - a golden photo opportunity!) Birdworld Kuranda can provide guided tours for all group bookings.

The birds were amazing half from Australia and another half from everywhere else, every bird was so colourful, there've even got 2 beautiful cassowarys, you even get to see a swan cleaning itself by turning its head 360 degrees, the friendly staff take you on...More

Thanks so much Benny for this lovely description of all the highlights of our park. The cassowaries are beautiful and are enjoying their upgraded enclosure.

Another great experience in this area. Birds flying all around, One even landed on me. Staff were very friendly and helpful telling people what not to wear that the birds may be attracted too and try and eat or damage.

That is really pleasing to see Tom. A lot of work has gone into this attraction in the preceding 12 months with our new Finch aviary etc, so great to see the positive feedback.

This is the best thing to do in Cairns. I would recommend it to any one ! :D seeing so many friendly birds so close up and having them climb all over you is a experience not to miss!

Wow, that is high praise indeed Katie. We are in the process of having an onside professional photographer as well who is passionate about birds, which should enhance our visitor experience even more.

Wonderful colourful birds both native and non-native, and feed them with bird seed from the ticket office. The macaws have great personalities. This is probably where you can see a couple of cassowaries if you didn't manage to see one in the wild. Don't try...More

Thanks for your lovely comments.

Enclosure extremely small with vast numbers of birds. Birds visibly dirty and ragged feathers. At time the birds flew around the enclosure together wildly, screeching. Not enough room for them to fly far

Thanks Sophie for your feedback. I was at Birdworld only two days ago and marvelled at how happy and healthy the birds are. They were flying really well and yes, they do screech, that's how birds communicate.

Thanks for your very positive feedback and yes our birds are cheeky and we do have some very clear signage about this on entry. That's just what birds do!

I'm a bird and wildlife photographer that usually avoids zoo's and the like because I don't believe animals and birds should be caged. But on on a visit to Kuranda I decided to take a look at Birdworld. I would say that for it's size...More

We are repeat visitors to Birdworld! My husband is infatuated with the sun conures. The staff are always helpful and well informed, the birds are always happy and content. Such a great experience. An incredible variety of beautiful, well cared for birds. Don't miss it!
