Nicely presented
Apr 2021
Nicely presented and well cared for. Head and foot stones plus a more modern memorial stone. Myth or legend worth visiting one of the physical points of the Robin Hood fable. The churchyard is up a steep hill north of Hathersage

It’s a grave
Sep 2020 • Couples
Call me a sceptic but is this really the grave of a man invented for a story or is it a very tall man and fits the need for something else to look at a beautiful village.
I convinced my wife who finds hills difficult that this tourist attraction was not far from our hotel. As you can see I am writing this review so I must have lived, though I don’t know how.
Our short walk was up a very steep hill, through a fabulous looking lychgate and past family graves worth more careful examination.
Not far into the graveyard is Little John’s grave cared for by the foresters and spookily with what looks like a parking meter next to it for donations.
Not to be missed 😂

Myth or Legend
Aug 2020
Intrigued by this grave and as our hotel had a signpost stating it was just a 1/3 of a mile away we felt we had to have a look. It was situated up a steep hill in a small churchyard.
Now to think this grave has to be some 700 years old and the whole Robin Hood story is something we know primarily through Disney, sceptics may say there is no way this can be the grave of Little John, but apparently they excavated the site in 1784 and the thigh bone was 30 inches long and this would mean that whoever's grave this was the person who lies here would be about 8 foot tall!

Surprise!

We were surprised to see Little John’s Grave in Hathersage church yard. It is beautifully maintained and an interesting link to History/myth.

Nothing spectacular

Easy to find once you make your way up the steep hill to the churchyard as very well signposted. But to be frank the grave itself was an anti-climax. The headstone appears much more modern than surrounding ones (appreciate there would have had to be a big element of restoration) but this just took away from the authenticity. The headstone mentions being under a yew tree whereas this appeared to be a large conifer (??). The church itself is impressive and the grounds very well kept - great views as well. But as this review is for 'Little John's Grave' it has to be average....

hidden away on a steep hill, you can drive up to the church, the grave is signposted so easy to find, its basically opposite the main door of the church. a small car park is 2 mins walk from the actual grave . ideal place to visit if you are in the area .

It is claimed that the man known as Little John in the Robin Hood stories is buried here. Did Robin Hood exist? Who knows but as far as I have read there is no conclusive proof so how do we know that Little John was a real man and he is buried here.

Sorry to be so skeptical but I believe in real sources for historical figures. This sounds more like mythology than history.

Some may doubt that this is really Little John's grave but why spoil the fun - the church is well worth a visit with interesting brasses and Bronte connections.

Well kept grave
May 2019 • Couples
Even if this is not his grave, the story about him is good and he was local. Worth a visit. The church is a lovely Anglican church and is well kept. The view around is also well worth the walk up.
