The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the mediaeval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Bird of Prey Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2.30Pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at Heron Happy Hour at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

Fantastic venue and service in the library that was very special. Having visited the castle several years ago, (when I was very impressed with the experience) I was expecting a good time. The wedding exceeded my expectations with a tour from a family member, a flight from a peregrine falcon, beautiful grounds and faultless service from the staff. Great day... More

The azaleas are outstanding. The drive is half a mile long filled with beautiful trees and play areas for the children. Unfortunately we missed the 11.30am owl demonstration. The 2pm birds of prey was the best we have ever seen. We saw the herons feeding at 4pm and we also able to see the 5 week old long eared owl.... More

We got married at this lovely location 10 years ago and we came back for our 10th anniversary. It's a stunning location and the accommodation is perfect for what we want. This time we brought our new addition, Paddy the springer spaniel who had a whale of a time. Thank you to all the staff for making us feel so... More

We went to Muncaster Castle for the sausage festival during the first May bank holiday. The gardens were spectacular - such vivid colours and abundance of flowers! The scenery is very breathtaking. We went to see the birds of prey show, and it was wonderful, such dedicated handlers and staff. It was definitely worth a visit!

We had booked the afternoon tea - which is only available on set dates - and managed to spend over five hours at this beautiful location. Unfortunately we arrived minutes too late to watch the owl display but had a leisurely stroll through the grounds admiring the wonderfully vibrant floral displays - can't spell some plant names or remember others... One of the highlights of my trip to the Lake District. House is fascinating and grounds are gorgeous. Owl and bird sanctuary including the show is terrific. Lots of things for children to do and very dog friendly. Peter Pennington, husband of the owner, is absolutely charming.

Had a lovely day out to catch the last of the rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias with Hubby and two dogs. Gardens not to be missed any time of the year. The display of birds of prey is not to be missed and the feeding of the heron. Great narration in the house. A must visit destination.

Spent a few days last week in the Lake District with friends and decided to visit Muncaster Castle. The Castle was interesting to go around, especially using the audio handset that you were given upon entry. Had lunch at the on site café that used to be the old stables, Jacket Potato - it was very nice. Left with garden... More

We went primarily to see the rhododendrons and the bird displays, but the bluebells were in flower and boy what a show. We were last there in 1984 and then visitors were shown around by Lord Pennington. This time visitors were given an audio wand, a bit impersonal but the details are just as good. Imagine our surprise when we... More

We came for the weekend and stayed at the camping and caravanning campsite just down the road from the castle. It was a lovely walk along a track, but the highlight was reaching the grounds of the castle and seeing the amazing rhododendrons. Wow is all I can say. The main reason we came was for the sausage festival that... More
