About
The historic and reputedly haunted Castle dating from the medieval age has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. It is a treasury of beautiful art and antiques, collected through the ages by the family who still live there. The Castle sits majestically in over 70 acres of wild, woodland gardens famous for collections of rhododendrons and azaleas set against the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland fells including Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain. The Hawk & Owl Centre is well worth a visit with daily displays at 2pm and watch the wild herons come in to feed at 4pm. The indoor MeadowVole Maze is an entertaining ecological attraction to entertain the young at heart. Playground, cafe, gift shops and an ancient church are all within the gardens. Regular events programme, including festivals, outdoor theatre, historical re-enactors and Halloween Week.

Brilliant day out!
Sep 2021 • Couples
Brilliant day out at Muncaster Castle. The flying displays were so impressive and allowed you to get really close to the birds and the commentary gave lots of useful and personal information which made you really invested in the individual birds. Never seen a display where multiple birds are flown freely at the same time - incredible! The birds all looked in great condition and their welfare was clearly paramount. We also toured the castle, enjoyed the coffee shop fare and enjoyed the grounds. Great day out!

Expensive for the gardens only and don’t try the cafe scones if you are dentally- challenged

We had a pleasant enough walk around the estate, though can’t comment on the castle or the bird centre as we had dogs with us. The setting looking over the Western Lake peaks is stunning and the longish walk from Ravenglass along the coastal path and the Esk estuary skirting the woods of the estate is well worth doing. The gardens are nothing to write home about, though probably they aren’t at their best in September. The cafe wasn’t great- dirty tables and concrete-like scones. The four of us would have been £30 richer(and better fed, I suspect) had we eaten in Ravenglass and just done the walk to the castle without entering the castle demense

Not to be missed

Can’t remember when we last spent so long at one venue. Two excellent (and very different) bird displays and a great castle tour (followed by a self-guided one). Staff fantastic, so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Don’t miss!

Well worth a visit

We found the castle leaflet in our hotel by chance on our visit to the Lake District and decided to take a visit. We weren’t disappointed and spent an amazing day there. (We didn’t go into the Castle or walk around the gardens a lot.)

The two bird displays were completely different to anything we’d ever seen and really spectacular with birds of prey flying loose around the arena, all returning happily at the end of their part in the display.

The staff we spoke to were friendly and enthusiastic about their work and happy to spend time chatting with us about the birds etc.

The heron feeding was also fascinating as we watched while wild heron were invited to come and fetch food. Not many did, but nevertheless it was good to hear about them.

If we lived closer it would be a place to revisit.

Lovely day out and amazing bird show!
Aug 2021 • Family
Wonderful day out, the castle grounds are beautiful and very well looked after. Lots to do walking around for kids with play parks, a tree net and fairy walk, as well as being a lovely walk for adults. The walk along the terrace garden to the side of the castle is really beautiful. The best part of the day was the skyhunters bird display, we were all blown away by how spectacular it was. The birds were amazing and the display exciting and informative. Unfortunately we missed the owl show in the morning but I'm sure it was also very good. We went as a large group of family with small children, parents and grandparents and a dog (also very dog friendly!) and we all had a lovely day out and were very impressed. Would happily return!

Outstanding place! Go now, borrow my car!

Sensational place! No exaggeration. My boyfriend and I have just visited the castle and owl and bird of prey shows and all I can say is....... truly wonderful! The 'Skyhunters' bird of prey display is outstanding! Information, exciting and I found it very moving with the accompanying music (learning how Vultures are persecuted in the wild in Africa) I happily bought two wristbands to help towards their conservation work.
The guided tour of the castle with the very knowledgeable resident Lady curator was fantastic also and she was able to answer the few questions I had. Her presentation was interesting, engaging and humorous.
Thanks guys.......keep up the good work!
