Great lunch
Oct 2019
The Captain Nelson was recommended to us by a local man when we were parking the car, and we were not disappointed. There is a good menu at reasonable prices. We only wanted a sandwich each and a pot of tea - and what fabulous sandwiches they were with plenty of filling, lovely fresh bread, accompanied by salad and tortilla crisps. The barman was also very friendly and attentive. The pub has a nice, cosy atmosphere with a maritime theme. The toilets were also spotless.

Absolutely STUNNING!!!!!!! One of the nicest meals we've ever had (worldwide). Stopped in as tourists to the area and will be recommending it for a long time to come!

Simply brilliant
Dec 2018 • Family
On a damp New Year’s Eve, we found sanctuary during a visit to Maryport at the Captain Nelson Tavern. The menu was simple yet hearty. We ate gorgeous slabs of chicken and ham pie with mash, veg and gravy, a jacket potato with cheese and onion, chicken dippers, chips and chilli dipping sauce and a kids fish and chips meal. Many other main and light dishes were also available, as were a good number of beers and other drinks. The service was attentive, friendly and quick. A great place for a drink and/or a meal. We’ll be back!

Best eatery in Maryport
Dec 2018 • Couples
We visited as a family, three adult couples for a family get to gether meal. This was our first eating experience here for some years and we were not disappointed at all
I wouldn't really say that Maryport is really well known for eating experiences...and that was where I was wrong.
The Captain Nelson Tavern is a little gem, a littĺe quirky in decoration, lots of painting by a local artist on the wall, mainly of local scenes and a working pizza oven near the bar area.
The food was served up in good time and was in excellent home cooking style. The portions were gigantic and big eaters will be well satisfied with both quantity and quality.
Price for six people was £100 which included one bottle of wine, two local pints of beer and a soft drink, that is very reasonable on today's restaurant prices.
My only complaint was the fact that non of us had room for a sweet!!
This will definitely not be our last visit, I would recommend this Tavern to anyone who likes great quality home cooked food...if you go in the evening just have a light snack during the day and you will enjoy a thoroughly fulfilling eating experience.

Good Traditional Pub Food
Nov 2018 • Couples
Stopped for lunch here on a cold and blustery day, but it was encouraging to see several diners already seated. The lunchtime menu comprises standard pub fare, which all seemed fine. Our haddock and chips tasted really good, nicely cooked and served by a helpful and friendly young man. We would happily eat here again.

Looks like a nice place but stops serving at 7.30
Aug 2018 • Couples
Would like to say what the food is like but can’t because we arrived at 8.45 to be informed that they don’t take orders after 7.30. Shame because the place looked nice and their was a friendly atmosphere.

Every time we come to Cumbria for a break we head to the Captain Nelson for our lunch, great food, great friendly atmosphere, helpful staff & very large portions. I have a soft spot for the fish, it’s massive & the best fish I’ve had.
I’m back in Cumbria next month lucky enough & will be going back 👍

Arrived just as kitchen was closing.... no problem. We’re immediatly welcomed & offered a menu. Drinks order brought to table. Service was faultless.
Food was great. Huge fish & chips with mushy peas.
Good home cooking. Actually saw the batter being made by the chef.... adding bear to the mix from the pump. Good price too.
We have 3 dogs. They were given water & lots of attention. Will be coming again.

Best fish and chips ever
Jul 2018 • Couples
Called in after a local elderly chap recommend here for eats. Pleased we followed his advice.
Lovely pub next to the harbour loads of free parking nearby.
We both opted for fish and chips. When it arrived we couldn't believe the size of the haddock one portion would have fed us both for a week. The batter on the haddock was absolutely outstanding, best I've tasted. The fish tasted devine and fresh as can be. The chips were really good as well.
Would I return here, most definitely
Would I recommend , again most definitely.
There were lots of others eating here as well which speaks volumes
