About
The museum can be found on the Sea Brows overlooking the Cumbrian town of Maryport on the edge of the Solway Firth Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. At the western end of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, the museum displays the fascinating collection of artefacts discovered at the adjacent Roman fort and civilian settlement. Visitors can explore people's lives and beliefs from 2000 years ago. The museum is housed in a Victorian Naval Reserve Training Battery and is a registered charity. To keep our visitors safe we have instigated a number of measures following Government and industry specific guidelines. We have the Visit Britain 'Good to Go' accreditation.

Fantastic and fascinating Senhouse Museum!
Aug 2021 • Family
Visited in the last week of August as a medium family group. We really enjoyed the museum and all the fascinating artefacts, it gave us a great insight into the area too. Staff were also very friendly, the lady at the front desk was very attentive and this really made our visit pleasant. The viewing platform was also excellent as we were able to see far into the distance, we had a look for the Isle of Man. We hope to visit again soon.

A Really Great Place
Sep 2021
A very interesting place to visit telling the story from the edge of the Roman empire. The museum is an absolute credit to volunteers and people who look after it.

Wonderful gem of a museum

This is a lovely place to spend an hour or 2 looking at the amazing altar collection and finds, and to sit and watch footage of excavations. Cosy library of Roman literature to read through. Building blocks and activity table for kids super fun. Very reasonable entry cost. Highly recommend a guided tour, so friendly and knowledgeable - thanks to Nick, my 7 year old found it engaging. A must visit.

So much to see
Aug 2021
We live locally and visit often. This is the extreme end of the Hadrian's Wall defences and a part often missed by tourists. There are many interesting displays of finds from the surrounding fields during several digs, including a Time Team special. It is mostly indoors and very suitable for a wet day but the outside watch tower is well worth going outside, even in poor weather. You can imagine the Romans watching out for those terrible barbarians across the Solway.

Excellent, great value.

One of the best community museums I have visited. Excellent displays of fascinating finds, very clearly explained with good audio-visual materials too. Lots for the children. Helpful and enthusiastic staff.

An interesting building, but the lack of space may prevent future development of the collection.

The best value £4 I've spent in a long while.

Well worth a visit

A large collection of local roman history with so much information provided. The items on display are vast, varied and well displayed. A great place to visit as a family, and I would recommend you go up to the Tower on your way out for fantastic views across to Scotland. The building was very clean, the staff very helpful and friendly, the gift shop choice had a nice varied selection with something for everyone. An excellent attraction and brilliant value for money.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit to the museum and Maryport. We agree that the views over the Solway Firth towards Scotland are spectacular. This part of the Cumbrian coast sees some amazing sunsets, if you are ever lucky to be in Maryport for the evening. I will pass on your comments to the staff and volunteers, they will be pleased that you noticed all their hard work in keeping the museum clean and welcoming for all our visitors.

This is a fascinating little museum with charming and friendly staff,. The historical significance of Maryport, and the museum itself was really interesting, had no idea of the Roman connection to the area before hand.

The walk up to the museum and surrounding views were also lovely.

Well worth the money, would highly recommend to others.
