This is the second time I visit this church. This time around, we were lucky to witness a wedding with mariachi music. Very kewl. I learned more about the history of the Madonna that resides here. The Virgin of Health, or Virgen de la Salud is the oldest Madonna in the Americas. It's older than the Virgen of Guadalupe (patrona... More

Location up the upper portion of town, the interior of the sanctuary appears to be mostly original. Lots of gilding on the altars. The 12 stations of the cross surround the sanctuary floor from front left counter-clockwise to front right. The outer patio for the entrance is very drab and worn, evidence of many do-overs over the decades. Local vendors... More

Join countless other visitors and residents of Patzcuaro to venerate Nuestra Senora de Salud. Important as a religion site more than an architectural attraction. .

I live in Mexico and believe me I have seen my share of churches. I enjoy them all. Many look very similar and other have just that difference that really makes them a must see. From it[s history to the very open and large feel, Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Salud is well worth the visit if you find... More

I visited on a Sunday. There were no services at the time but the doors were open. Hours posted outside showed most days you can visit until about 8pm. The outside was not traditional and not elaborate but the interior was unexpectedly grand. Recommend a visit.

It';s easy to let yourself slip back in time to the colonial days in Patzcuaro when walking the expansive grounds or just sitting quietly in the last pew in the church. Up and away from the center. Nice way to "absorb" the feel and spirit of days gone by.

Typical boveda ceilings and dome at the transept. Very light and airy compared with many churches in Mexico. Well attended on the day I was there as it was Palm Sunday. Lots of stall outside selling religious and other knick knacks.
