The area is well kept, as are majority of the graves. a large beautiful (fig?) tree in the middle. Saw a Koala, walking from one tree to the next, totally oblivious to us. Plenty of bush stone curlews around also.

The first burial at the Dunwich cemetery is thought to have been in 1847, making it one of the earliest cemeteries in Queensland. In 1850 a typhus epidemic broke out on the ship Emigrant with 27 dead. Dunwich had only just become a quarantine station...More

Directly opposite the passenger ferry terminal in Dunwich take time to stroll through the cemetery to reveal some of the island's history. The unmarked graves from the 1850s are particularly telling about the typhus outbreak, drownings and the age of settlers. These gravestones sit among...More

Amazing amount of local history in North Stradbroke Island. The cemetery has some very old headstones and is a testament to the hardships of early pioneer settlement.

I was passing in the bus with the sea on my left and lorious park on my right. Then noticed a huge crowd of people in a park, then saw gravestones. It looked surreal. I got off the bus and wandered into the park. A...More

We came primarily to this cemetery in June 2013 to look for a family member who was buried there in 1911 but we could not find his grave. Dunwich Benevolent Asylum operated on Stradbroke Island for people with incurable conditions, so that many of the...More
