It is a nice drive to the lake just to see outside of Xining. The lake is considered a mustsee place but it will depend on the season though. Go there in the monsoon time will probably see cloudy/raining weather and the view of the lake is not very great.

The Qinghai Lake, also known as Lake Kokonor, is a must-see. It is amazingly beautiful and is perhaps the most beautiful lake in China. In July, the weather was mild and it was really a good time to go. This place is very popular with local and overseas tourists.

It's very cold when we reach there. So please bring warm clothing when visiting the place. The lake sits at 3190m high and it is only about 100km from Xining, which is the capital of Qinghai province. Tourist can take a boat ride on the turquoise waves of the lake or go horseback riding along the shores with Tibetan nomads.

The place it really beautiful and mesmerizing. The lake with clear blue water and emerald green water and has many water sports opportunities here. The entry ticket is RMB 100 and if you have a valid chinese student card you get in by paying only RMB 50.

This is the largest Chinese lake with some Tibetan / pseudo-Tibetan attractions. Some souvenirs, folklore and architecture. Almost all tourists are and will be Chinese. It takes 2-3 hours from Xining anyway. You can take a boat ride or just look around people taking pictures. Some birds around (I counted 40 species in 1,5 hours) - a must see is... More

Kokonor is its Mongolian name. Visited during the off-peak season, and trust me it's torturing trying to get lodging along the lake. Finally found one but facilities sucked though. Nevertheless, it was an awefully nice experience without the tourist crowd around. Tend to get a lil' cold, so prepare some thick clothings. Worth the trip in my opinion.

Its took us 2-3 hours by private car from our Hotel to here. It was so peaceful and quiet there. The sky was clear and the air was so fresh although the oxygen level low. Be aware of the strong sunlight there, my face turned reddish when return to hotel. Tips: Bring your sunblock and sunglasses with you when visiting... More

One of the most popular places to go to in the Xining area but it does take 2-3hrs to get there by car. It's at 3200m elevation (it can get chilly!Bring a jacket!) and China's biggest lake but I wasn't that impressed. It doesn't look like the whole lake is open to walk along - there is only an elevated... More

Wonderful trip by car from XINING to Quinhai or kokonor lake. Snowded mountains, streams, yaks, tibetan goats, shepperds and huge trucks with uncertain loadinds; landscapes absolutely magestic with prayer flags. A lot of monasteries to be visited, it is a sacred area and you will see pilgrims "walking" on their knees and hands on some times hundred of kilometers around... More
