About
Yellow Branch Pottery & Cheese is located on 50 acres in a mountain cove near Fontana Lake. Our aim is to live from the land in a sustainable way. Our passion is to grow as much of our food as we can. We acquired a Jersey milk cow in 1981 and within a few years and a few more cows, shifted from growing organic vegetables for the restaurant trade to becoming licensed in 1986 to produce and sell the cheese we originated and were making for ourselves. The dairy is pasture-based, and the pastures are managed using sustainable organic practices. No herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers are used. Growth hormones are not given to the cows. Yellow Branch Cheeses are made by hand in small batches following an original recipe that Karen developed and Bruce has refined. Whole unpasteurized milk is used along with microbial rennet, lactic culture, and Celtic Sea Salt. The distinctive flavor of the handcrafted cheese results from the high-quality fresh milk flavored by the nutritious pasture grasses. Yellow Branch Farmstead Cheese has a mild, buttery, full-bodied flavor and is a versatile table cheese that goes well with many foods. Award-winning Yellow Branch Pepper is made with jalapeno peppers organically grown in the vegetable garden and ripened to bright red. The creamy flavor of the Farmstead cheese is enriched with a mildly-hot, ripe pepper taste. Yellow Branch Basil is made with basil grown in the vegetable garden and the herb compliments the creamy, flavorful Farmstead variety. Yellow Branch Natural Rind is unwaxed and is a sharper, drier version of the Farmstead with cheddar overtones. Other varieties include Yellow Branch Tomato Basil, Yellow Branch Aged Curd, Yellow Branch Beer Cheese made with Heinzelmannchen Black Forest Stout, and Yellow Branch Reserve, aged for 2 years. Yellow Branch Pottery is a working pottery studio established in 1983. The studio which was built by Bruce, is located down the hill from the farm on land which is being gardened to provide food and habitat especially for butterflies and hummingbirds. Benches and a picnic table provide pleasant places to sit and enjoy the sounds and sights of the water, birds, butterflies and garden. Karen has been making pots for over 30 years. She produces distinctive functional stoneware on the potter's wheel and makes some hand-built items as well. Tableware, oven ware, planters, lamps, luminaries, sculpture, ornaments, along with the work of neighboring artisans are for sale in the gallery. Cheese is available at the pottery studio to sample and to purchase. Open by appointment December - March.

Delicious cheese and beautiful pottery
May 2021
Excellent cheese, beautiful pottery, and wonderful hosts. My family stayed in the farmhouse for a few days and loved it there. If you like cheese or pottery, it's a very neat place to check out. Also, if you're looking for a peaceful mountain retreat, the farmhouse is a fantastic place to stay.

Best grilled cheese sandwich!
May 2020
We loved visiting Yellow Branch Pottery & Cheese! We bought several cheeses and used them to craft the PERFECT grilled cheese sandwich :) We also got to pet their cows and try fresh cheese curds. This family is great and you should definitely check out what they have to offer.

A gem in the middle of nowhere...in the middle of nowhere. (Not a typo.)
Nov 2019
A weekend getaway to the outstanding Snowbird Mountain Lodge included a foray into the forests surrounding. The Lodge day manager (cheerful and informative is the understatement) suggested we attempt to find Yellow Branch. The advice was well-taken, and after about 75 twists and turns along a few of North Carolina's country roads (spectacular foliage scenes included), we discovered Yellow Branch. The setting is fairytale-ish)...a cottage tucked away. Owner as pleasant and, by a look at the pottery, as talented as could be. She handles the pottery; her spouse is in charge of the cheeses. Wonderful one-two combo with whom you will be pleased to spend some time. Worth the drive. Next time up that way we will surely reprise our initial visit.

Thank you so much for visiting us! We are grateful to Snowbird Mountain Lodge for their referrals. Folks are always welcome to watch whatever is going on in the pottery studio, taste cheese at the pottery and walk up to the farm. Thank you for taking the time to give us such a great review. Hope you can return.

Small pottery & cheese store
Oct 2019 • Friends
Working pottery store. You can meet the artisan. A lot of similar pottery in similar colors. They also sold cheese made locally. You can sample. We thought prices for pottery a bit higher than other similar places. A bit tricky to find. We enjoyed wandering though their garden. Someone there sure has a green thumb. Before you go check the hours & days open. This store has 2 galleries on the small side.

Thank you for visiting us. The best way to find us is at 1073 Old Yellow Branch Road, 28771. We are located just off of Hwy 28, about 8 miles south of Fontana Dam. The cheese is made on our farm from the milk of our own cows. Hope you can return!

Yellow Branch Pottery and Cheese is a quant small local business. Karen always greets visitors in her kind relaxed way. The pottery is unique and beautiful. My wife loves her purple coffee cup. We son and dil love their complete set of dishes. The cheese is made in small batches. I recommend the farmstead. It is great. A visit here is worth the time off the path.

Thank you so much for visiting us! Somehow we missed seeing this review in July when you wrote it. My sincere apologies. Making pottery for folks to use is a passion and making the connections that arise when the pots go home with our new friends is a real blessing. Same with the cheese! We are thrilled that the cheeses are loved and appreciated. Thank you again!

Such a wonderful place to see

My family and I stopped in here after a day of kayaking at Fontana and on our way back to BC. Carol welcomed us as we pulled in and Karen, the owner was also there to welcome us. They had the plates set out of cheese samples which my teenage kids devoured and were so delicious! The basil was our fav! Karen was working on some pottery in her workshop and invited us in to watch and give us some history of her pottery and farm that her and her husband have been running for 40 years. Such sweet people and great hospitality here. We bought a beautiful pottery bowl to take with us along with some great cheeses. It was our daughters 15th birthday and Karen gave her a beautiful magnet to take home as a nice gift. Thanks for a great visit! We loved it here and well worth the side trip!

Worth the Trip
Oct 2018 • Family
My family had set aside a beautiful Fall afternoon to drive around Robbinsville and check out the local artisan stops. The Yellow Branch Pottery and Cheese was a true delight. The garden was thick with flowers and butterflies. The shop is filled with stunning pottery- unique glazes (if you're an aficianado of such) and amazing cheese. There is a sitting area on the porch. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, helpful. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in the area. I would recommend watching small children in the store. It's not very big and the pottery is accessible to small hands.

The cheeses are amazing.....

From their animals right on the farm and the owners are great too. They are a perfect fit in the community and worth a detour from the main road. If you can visit, they used to participate in a community artisan drive around tour and were cordial hosts when many visitors descended upon them. It was a nice way to see local artists, their work and see the county's points of pride in an organized and enjoyable forum. I've missed the past few summers (there was a fall tour too) but am happy that the cheeses can be shipped.

Thank you so much for visiting us and your kind words. We have a great community of artisans who collaborate and support each other. We still have the artisan drive about - twice yearly in late June and Thanksgiving weekend. We are grateful for our life here and sharing it with all who visit!

Outstanding service and quality
Jan 2018 • Couples
We asked if we could stop by the shop since it wasn't open and Karen came in, opened up, and showed us the pottery shop and some of her creations. I was looking for another of her custom-made coffee mugs but we wound up buying some other pieces instead. If you love pottery and great craftsmanship, this is worth the time and effort to visit.

Artisan cheese is also available from their farm located close by. Everyone is very friendly and willing to show visitors around.

The construction on highway 28 is making it difficult if you're coming in from the north, which would force a detour through Robbinsville, but don't let that keep you from making the trip.

Thank you, Bill! It was so much fun visiting with you, Carolyn and Janet! I was also able to ship your pieces since you were flying back home. I love it when folks call and make an appointment during the winter months when the pottery is closed. It also can work "by chance". We welcome folks who make their way to the farm which is just up the lane from the pottery. Thank you for taking the time to review your visit with us! We are blessed with creative work that we can share with others.

pottery and artisan cheese - what a combo
Dec 2017 • Couples
Karen is the nicest lady!!! She is the potter and such nice pieces too. We only bought a bear magnet as we are trying to downsize but I wish I had know about her 10yrs ago! We did buy some cheese as her husband is the farmer and cheese maker. Delicious - and some of the other places on the Stecoah Valley Artisan Tour sells his cheese too. Reasonably priced too. We buy artisan/farm cheese at a number of places in TN, GA, KY, OH and now NC. We find them to be really good and different flavors and were not disappointed here.
She gave my husband, because he admired it a little clay scene done by a little girl many, many years ago and it is now part of our Christmas decorations. Thanks Karen!

Thank you so much! It was fun meeting both of you too and I'm happy that little sculpture has a new home now...part of my downsizing process. We are happy to ship cheese whenever you want more! Have a blessed Christmas! Hope you will return!
