I'm a local (Down East Carteret County). Want to see real wild ponies? Go further south (take the Ocracoke/Cedar Island Ferry and then take the small, daily ferry out of Beaufort, NC - which doesn't run in the winter) and see the REAL wild ponies...More

Really there isn't much to see. There is a walking path and a plaque explains how they got there. Smells like horses and the NPS is the one who take care of them.

It was a good diversion for the young grandkids, but otherwise there is not a lot to see. Be sure to go down the unmarked path to find more ponies!

We just expected something more here maybe it was due to time of year. Little one was excited to see one of the ponies eating near the fence

It was fun to see the Ocracoke ponies. They were fairly close to the fence and there is a platform where you can view them. It is so amazing that these wild horses have been living on the Outer Banks all these years, despite the...More

You should make the quick stop to see these unique wild ponies. They are a big part of the OBX history. If you or the kids love horses then this is worth you 10 minutes.

The Ocracoke outer banks ponies used to run wild on the island. Islanders had picket fences around their houses to keep them out of their gardens, but since Hwy 12 was built in the 1960s the ponies had to be penned in their own preserve...More

You can climb up on an observation deck and see a few ponies inside a fenced enclosure. Really...that’s it.

After disembarking the Hatteras ferry onto Ocracoke Island, make sure to pull off Highway 12 and admire the wild ponies in the pen. You can even adopt one of the ponies when you stop in the park office in the Village! Visiting the wild ponies...More
