The Fort Ocracoke Monument is an interesting stop. It’s along the beautiful scenic water front and worth the time to stop and read the history.

Love that this type of thing exists to learn history at your own pace. Nice view of the water here too.

The marker commemorates the historic fort which remains were discovered underwater in 1998. It was located on Beacon Island which is in Ocracoke inlet. The fort was only in existence for about 4 months in 1861. The remains were submerged by a hurricane in 1933.
