Hike to a Mountain Top: Waterrock Knob
May 2021
Hiking to the top of Waterrock Knob is EXCITING and SCENIC. For those not up to this .5 mile hike to the top the views from the Parking Lot and Visitors Center are still terrific. The hike is two sections .2 miles is Pedestrian Hike on paved pathway to stone wall overlook. Then the hike ascends fairly steeply up the mountain the next .3 miles.
In .5 miles the trail climbs 400 ft. so that is 80 ft. per tenth of a mile. The trail is well marked, is sometimes a dirt path, but mainly a rocky path (almost forming steps). Some areas have stairs built to go around steep or dangerous areas. The views from the top are spectacular. We went on a Monday in May and there was little traffic. The entire time we were at the top and ate our picnic lunch it was just the two of us. So peaceful and beautiful.
Be sure to take water, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and snacks. There are no places to get food or drinks on the Parkway.

Spectacular 360 degree View

If you like the hike, you can go up top, but you won’t need to! Great for an accessible stop, which was true for my husband.

Strenuous uphill but worth it
Nov 2020 • Couples
Don’t take this half mile hike lightly. Hubby and I work out daily but we were still breathing hard on the way up as it is straight uphill. Worth the view though and then downhill all the way back.

Beautiful for sunrise/sunset
Oct 2020 • Couples
This is a great place to view the sunrise and sunset. The views from the parking lot are excellent and often popular. The hike to the top is short but steep, definitely makes your heart rate go up. It is a different view from the top but not unobstructed.

Unexpected, fun hike. So glad we stopped!
Sep 2020
Stopped for lunch out of our cooler. Didn't expect to hike, but took the .5 mile trail. It was perfect for us. Wanted to get out of the car for a bit and a great view from the top. Hike was steep, but doable.

Pretty hike. It is strenuous for a novice hiker. Views were clear. Check in at visitor center for info.

Our fav trek to find the plane
Aug 2020 • Family
Got here too late in the day, our only views were on the road up to waterrock knob. But we came here to find the airplane crash. We started way too late as it was getting dark on us. I didn’t do enough research and thought it was near the orange ribbons on the trees not too far into the sketchily hike. It was muddy and quite the adventure. With that said it was my son and I favorite hike on our trip. The side trail to find the airplane not the hike up to waterrock knob. We needed up turning around and after reading more up on it we were prob pretty close. We got off the mountain to our car and it was pitch black. There were still others out still looking. I hope they made it back safely. I told my son we would be back some day and try to find it again!

Beautiful area
Aug 2020
Beautiful views. Some picnic tables or you can tailgate if you want. Can bring own chairs to sit & enjoy the view. If you decide to hike up the top, make sure you have appropriate shoes and are in good shape. Very steep climb in some areas. I was huffing & puffing almost immediately due to steep incline. Found it very strenuous. My hubby made it to the top—I made it 3/4 or so—he said got lot steeper as went on. Beautiful views though. Guess I’ll need to beef up my aerobics & try again next year! Saw lot of families, all ages of people hiking up the mtn. Very family & pet friendly.

Fantastic views of the surrounding area.

Worth the drive up, and if you’re up for it, the climb to the summit is well worth it. The views are stunning.
