Moderate hiking trail, ~45-60 min, packed dirt with an occasional sand trap. No wheelchair access. Nice maritime forest scapes, not much observable wildlife - just squirrels, chipmunks, lizards, and an occasional snake. Particularly nice in the Spring and the Fall, in Summer could be rather...More

The Sweet Gum Trail is marked as "moderate" and that's a fair assessment. We're mid-sixties, in decent but not in exceptional shape, and it was perfect for us. Kids five or older would also enjoy it. It's mostly all in the shade and there are...More

Sweetgum Swamp Trail is part of the Nag Head Woods Nature Preserve. It is very quiet and peaceful. If you are looking for a cool shady place to get away from the crowds, noise and heat of the developed areas this is a great place...More

We visited day before yesterday and was hoping to come back again before leaving the beach, but that doesn't seem possible right now. The place is peaceful and beautiful but we could still smell the strong aroma of "wet burnt wood". We didn't stay long...More

A fun trail to explore. Defiantly worth the visit!!!!!!!! especially on a nice warm or cool day. The trail wasn't hard to walk on and mapped out well.

I took my three year old twins, seven year old daughter, and 12 year old niece on this hike. They all did fine. The only challenge was the previously mentioned sand hill part of the trail. There are also some really stairs built into the...More

Rated as moderate, but one sand hill could probably be considered difficult for some hikers. My husband and I enjoyed the peaceful hike. The trail is well marked and easy to follow.
