Located at the old courthouse in Jefferson North Carolina is the Ashe County history museum. Filled with wonderful displays including a small scale replica of the 'Virginia Creeper" train traveling in Ashe County in 'days-thus-past"...and a view of "Ore- Knob Mine" and what it was like living in a mining town after the civil war. Free admission and fun for... More

This is an old courthouse turned museum with wonderful displays downstairs plus a very nice gift shop. We have been back twice and still have not seen it all. This is not that big but we have not had enough time each visit to see all the amazing detail put into each area, especially the train section.

Nice building, interesting exhibits, good graphics. Staff seemed a bit preoccupied. It was a good way to spend a hour while waiting for an appointment.

we took the kids here, ages 2, 9 12 and 14 they loved it , everything was displayed very well and the guides were very good at telling the stories, my husband and I plan to go back alone to look at everything again, just in case we missed something the first time. I would highly recommend everyone check it... More

Visited the local court house as well as Museum of Ashe County History. The local library was very educational. Visited several grave sites looking for family. Ate at a local restaurant, talked to several people. All together the entire County was so welcoming, my only regret was having to leave. This was a trip I took with my son and... More

....are all appropriate adjectives for this wonderful place. We really enjoyed spending time with the very friendly staff and locals and learned a lot about the area and about my family that has roots here. We came back and spent some time at the Annual Fall Leaf Festival and had a blast! That 12 year old girl in one of... More

If you love history (Ashe County in particular), you'll love this beautifully, lovingly restored 1904 courthouse. First floor is a museum of Ashe County history. The second (courtroom itself) is still under renovation.

The Museum of Ashe County History is one of the best attractions that I have been to. They have restored the old courthouse into a museum. I like one of their exhibits. They have one room that they have turned into a model of the old railroad. It is neat to see all of the houses and people.

While passing through Jefferson, NC, we stopped here because we enjoy history. We weren't disappointed. Don Long, one of the curators of the museum gave us a phenomenal tour of the museum. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Ashe County and the different people and industries that helped shape this part of North Carolina. The building where the... More

We visited Ashe County to see where some of my eighteenth and nineteenth century relatives may have lived. Ashe County is beautiful but, as we found out, hard to get to in days of old. This museum is a must stop and see for anyone visiting Ashe County since it is packed with history of and facts about the people... More
