Taste of Carolina - Durham Food Tour - 23 Dec 2023
Wow, Taste of Carolina really delivered some excellent bites in Durham today. Our agenda today included stops at: Toasted, Boricua Soul, Queeny’s, Bull City Burger, sweets by Shayda. All restaurants did an excellent job. There were six in our party. Here are my individual notes.
Toasted - Toasted has been thriving in Durham for over a decade. They offer unique soups and toasted bites/panini’s. We were served a cauliflower soup and an avocado crustini. I loved the cauliflower soup. It was surprisingly creamy and tasty. Two In our party loved the avacado crustini,
Boricua Soul - This place is special. The husband and wife owners have a captivating story to share about the historical and Philosophical origins of their culinary adventure. They served us a “lunch box” with perfectly prepared Puerto Rican roast pork, greens (soul food) , Mac & Cheese (soul food) and tostones (Puerto Rican). It was a huge bite and was the favorite stop for 5 people in our party. Next time we attend a Durham Bulls game we plan to eat here.
Queeny’s - is a friendly, creative bar / pub. They served us upscale nachos and a glass of dry cider. The nachos were very popular. The dry cider was interesting and unique. They owner made us feel welcome and encouraged us to try the many well designed drinks and bar foods.
Bill City Burgers - The owner do an outstanding job describing his unique commitment to serving only Greason fed beef raised locally and making every item served here in house by his team of chefs. The burgers were excellent. They were bursting with beefy flavor and cooked perfectly. Be sure to try the deep fried pickles. So unique and loved by all. Two in our party picked this stop as their “Best Bite” selection.
Sweets by Sayda - our last stop offered devine French Pastries. Macrons, croissants and other delicacies were shared. Share these pastries with those you love. They will treasure these treats.
Lastly, I would like to share our deep appreciation to the folks at “Taste of Carolina” food tours. Our hosts had to manage finding a fifth stop today since their schedule included a venue who had to close due to kitchen staff all falling ill. In addition, I was recently released from the hospital due to foot surgery. These made waking very difficult. Our hosts did everything possible to make sure I was included in all of the stops. We plan on doing these Taste of Carolina Tours in the future: Hillsborough, Carrboro and Winston-Salem.

We really enjoyed our food and drink tour of Downtown Durham. The restaurants and tasting plates were amazing, as were the drinks. Our guide, Amy, was fantastic. She was fun and energetic and friendly. She had great information about the city and fun facts about each place we visited. I would definitely recommend, and even go again.

My husband and I enjoyed an afternoon touring Durham, learning some new and interesting facts and exploring some delicious restaurants with Cat as our tour guide! Her enthusiasm for Durham was contagious and she clearly knew so much about the history and all of the eateries throughout the city! The cocktail bars were so unique, but our favorite new find was the Durham Food Hall. Lula & Sadies meatloaf was unbelievably delicious! We have lived in the area for over 20 years and love finding new places to try. Thank you, Cat, for sharing Durham with us!

We have taken many food tours in our travels but never thought of doing one in our home city! That was, until, this weekend. We met downtown to start the tour. Irene was our guide and she was awesome! Great personality, friendly, and a wealth of knowledge. She was also training a new guide, Amy. She also had a great personality. The tour took us to several new places and some mainstays as well. This was a food and “adult beverage” walking tour. Everything we ate and drank was amazing. All the placed we visited we will return to again. The group we had were great people, we all chatted away during the tour. Along the way to the stops Irene would tells us cool history facts about the city and the part of the city we were in. We had an absolutely fantastic night. I would like to go and take the earlier tour as it goes to different places. When you book this tour you will eat great food, drink unbelievable cocktails and wines, see beautiful spaces, and get some history as well. It’s a very well rounded night!

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon food tour last Saturday in Durham, North Carolina. We had read about Taste Carolina Food Tours and were fortunate to find a couple of openings in this tour. The January weather was absolutely warm and beautiful (a winter surprise!) for a walking tour of several food establishments in downtown Durham. Our tour guide was Irene, who really loved Durham and gave us helpful background information on the city, its history and the current emphasis on delicious, locally sourced food in several nearby restaurants. Copa was our first stop. It has a decided Cuban emphasis in the dishes offered. We enjoyed a pork sandwich there and it more than met our expectations: the pickles were house made and the size, freshness and flavor of the sandwich made it quite scrumptious! Next we enjoyed a grass-fed, juicy burger at Bull City Burger and Brewery. The owner delighted us with the "story" of this restaurant. He focused on providing the best (!!) burger from grass-fed local cows, on the most delicious house-made buns, accompanied by homemade pickles and slaw, as well as a choice of beers made on site. He also cared about supporting local farms, producing excellent food in the most sustainable way possible and providing a living wage to his employees. This was an exceptional culinary experience! Our tour also included a delicious avocado crostini with cauliflower soup at Toast, samples of a white pizza and a red pizza, both wonderful, at Pizzeria Toro and very fresh, delectable smoked salmon on toast at Lucky's Delicatessen. Some delicious house-made ice cream at The Parlour concluded our day's food adventures in downtown Durham. Irene was very organized and knew a lot about the places we visited. She was an excellent guide! We really enjoyed this food tour and hope to go on a Taste Carolina Gourmet Food Tour in Winston-Salem later this winter.

My daughter lives in Durham and we both enjoyed this food tour. Our tour guide, Cat, was fantastic. She had the right balance between providing interesting info on local history while letting us enjoy the amazing variety of the mostly delicious food and varied libations. Please note that we
were extremely full at the end of
of what we felt was a fun and interesting event. If you are visiting from out of town, or just want to explore a few cool local places with friends, I highly recommend the Taste Carolina
tour!

What a fun and wonderful way to stroll through downtown Durham while learning little historical facts. Our guide was very personable, fun and knowledgeable. We had wonderful tastings along the way. The walk was not too long, broken up with six stops and different restaurants. The restaurants chosen were a nice variety of food and beverages. The Cuban restaurant (the pork sandwich with plantain chips) and the Pizzeria were my favorite. The pizzeria had very generous servings of a mushroom pizza, an eggplant and riccata cheese pizza .and roasted okra with a wonderful dipping sauce. Most of the restaurants served ale or wine. A really fun and informative day!!

I love food walking tours and this was no exception. We had a great stroll around the downtown, lots of historical information intertwined with delicious food and beverages. Our guide was informative and friendly, and kept us on track as far as time. So many great tastings in one afternoon. We went back to several of the stops for a full meal.
