The 'to-go' box of gems is a box of dirt. Totally not worth $1 let alone what we paid. Maybe they give the worthless boxes as folks won't know there is zippo in it until they are hundreds of miles away. Go to the Maggie Valley Rock shop as their boxes are awesome. Below is the worthless box from Smoky... More

This place has been around for a long time and offers a lot of bang for the buck. My wife actually got a huge midnight sapphire that will make several earrings and necklaces.

It's not really a mine. Visitors receive bags of dirt for panning gold and various gemstones. And that's about it. There is a rather interesting shop with some good-quality jewelry, but other than that, there is little to detain even the most casual tourist. There are far better things to do in the Great Smokies, so don't waste your time... More

We will do anything I think for fun. Pay for a 2 buckets of dirt and wash them hoping to find a gem. I know sounds stupid but was fun...

The three of us got the $50 5 gal. bucket and had a great time sifting for jewels. Hold onto to all of your rocks because many gems look like nothing but old rock. We found emeralds, amethyst, citrine, garnets and more. For $35 you can have them cut for jewelry.
