Canadian Hole may be an unfamiliar term to the typical, laid-back Hatteras Islander vacationer, but to windsurfers around the world, the phrase invokes thoughts of an exact, postcard-perfect locale on the Outer Banks, where windsurfing and water sports conditions are truly at their global best, and any given day is a fantastic day to enjoy the ride.

No matter what direction winds come from - you will get the most of it at the Canadian hole. Although not the place with most flat water around the Hatteras spots , it is the best for the clean and strong wind!

Our labrador retrievers beg and cry to visit Canadian Hole for fetch and swimming. It's very accessible, easy to walk for older dogs, and pretty shallow so if they've got long legs they can still touch the bottom. They demand visits every night! We try to time our visit with sunset - it's breathtaking.

Always enjoy seeing the enthusiasts on the water, with either their parasails or boards. Breeze is very good and the participants can really scoot along.

We stopped at this day use area because the grand kids wanted to spend some time in the water and not have to worry about waves wiping them out. What a great little gem of a place. The kids could walk out into the sound, play in the sand, and float on their boogie boards. We came back the next... More

This spot is great for little kids as it is very shallow for a long way out from shore. We traveled there to try out a new SUP and it was the perfect spot for this. The days we went there was little to no wind.

We went to the Canadian hole on a fairly warm but not windy August morning. The sign says Haulover, as others have mentioned, and you could easily miss it if you're not looking carefully. There's a decent but not large parking lot. Changing rooms and bathrooms are clean, and an outdoor showering station is conveniently placed to wash off sand.... More
