Tough hike to the top. Only attempt if you have good running shoes or hiking boots and are comfortable hiking for 7-10 hours. The trail is decently maintained, but there are several sections that are rocky or filled with roots. There are bathrooms, water, and a snack shack at the top where you can rest and re-supply. Not the most... More

Tried to beat a storm front but lost. When I got to the mountain it was engulfed in clouds, rain and fog. The wind was blowing very strong, but I still hiked from the parking lot to the summit. I bet it is very beautiful when the sun is out. The park roads are good and so are the facilities.... More

Mt. Mitchell is renowned as the highest point East of the Mississippi at about 6200', with views extending up to 85 miles on a clear day. Although the vistas were magnificent, the hazy day that greeted our visit definitely took away from the experience. Try to call the Park office first!

Drove to the top on a foggy morning. Interesting to drive. By afternoon the fog had cleared and you could see for miles. You drive most of the way and walk a short, paved trail to the top.

From the tower at the summit, you are above all other US peaks east of the Rocky Mountains. You can't quite see to the Rockies from North Carolina due to curvature of the earth, but you sure can see a long, long way in all 360 degrees if there are no clouds or mist in the way. I had a... More

Took my wife up on 5/6/17 arriving after lunch. Snow began before we arrived and at the summit was accumulating on the ground. Not what we expected but pretty fun. Park closed about 2pm due to weather.

Beautiful drive to the summit. From the parking lot is a short paved walkway to the peak. there is a gift shop and bathrooms at the parking area. Once you walk to to the top you have 360 degree views of the beautiful mountain range.

Mt. Mitchell doesn't not disappoint. It has great views and a wonderful restaurant for visitors to eat at while there. The one main thing to do: check the weather report at Mt. Mitchell. The weather can be fine down in Asheville but horrible up there.
