First I'd like to mention that our tour to Quilotoa was handled by Francisco Estrella, a free-lance tour guide who operates in Quito and Banos. He is an amazing young man who is very knowledgeable about the local people, and eco-systems. He speaks English well and is thoughtful and helpful. You can reach him at FC-Estella@hotmail.com. The trip from Banos to... More

Definitely take the principle road down and go kayaking at the lake. It is also worth it to find the 'Shalala mirrador' for the best view.

The Laguna is beautiful as long as you get there when the sky is relatively clear. If it's cloudy don't bother to go. The water in the laguna changes colour with the differing light on the laguna. To walk down to the waters edge takes 30 minutes and 1.5 hours to get back up. Unless you hire a donkey to... More

This is a must do/see in Ecuador. A great view from the top on the lake, a nice walk down over sandy roads and a ride back up on the back of a horse.

This was an amazing experience. The lagoon is absolutely beautiful. Be prepared for quite a hike! It is a long way down to the bottom and the path is very sandy, dusty, and slippery. Wear good hiking shoes. You WILL get very dirty, so don't wear good clothes! The hike back up is very difficult, just take it slow. If... More

Beautiful lake. I did the Quilotoa loop and arrived here last which I think is the best route to take. I got a bit lost coming up so it was a struggle but worth it once I found the right path and saw the lake. It's at 3800 metres and very windy on top so make sure you are dressed... More

I went with a small tour group. We passed Cotopaxi on the way there and were able to stop for a few pictures because it was a beautiful day! We also stopped at a local market to pick up some food for another stop at a local quichoa family's house along the way. There is an agreement between the indigenous... More

We arrived very early in the morning. We hiked down and were 2 of 4 people down at the lake. It was the most peaceful place ever. As time passed more and more folks came down and we went back up. quite the hike but so worth it. We bought alpaca sweaters and scarfs at the Artisan shops at the... More

Really nice view from the top of the crater, you can go down if you'd like, the trip back to the top can be exhausting but totally worth it.

This is one of the most beautiful places that Ecuador has to offer. I don't consider it expensive, in fact is very economical, many options for lodging, restaurants and hike trails. Though I have to warn you that if you are thinking about hiking some trails get in shape, because the altitude could affect you considerable. Quilotoa is almost at... More
