Don't miss this interesting lighthouse tucked at the end of a path
May 2021
I passed the sign for the Saugerties Lighthouse on my trip up to Catskill, NY and planned a trip when I drove back down to Saugerties.

The path down the lighthouse can be difficult without the right shoes and make sure to go on a sunny day while the sun is shining. That path can be dangerous when it gets dark outside. On a sunny afternoon it is very nice walk. There are all sorts of interesting wildflowers along the route.

The lighthouse itself can use some renovation. The place was closed inside because it serves as a B & B and the lighthouse keepers home. Still the lighthouse looks very majestic on the side of the river. It built in a very different era and you can see its many uses.

Check before you go there. We found it was closed for the season. You cannot even go on the trail to see it from afar, because the gate is closed. I hope they will open it in the spring.

Check website before going
Jul 2020
I’m sure I would have given it an excellent rating, but we couldn’t get in. We didn’t get out to read the sign on the locked gate about a maintenance closure, so I’m not sure why the whole area was closed and not just the lighthouse. We stopped there today, 7/18/20 and we were very disappointed, we weren’t aware of the closure. So, my advice is to check the lighthouse website before going.

A pleasant day.

Very nice historic area with a hiking trail leading to the lighthouse itself. It is mostly a dirt/sandy trail so those with disabilities be warned. I use a cane myself and had a little difficulty but made it through. Otherwise a nice day and pleasant views of the water and surrounding areas.

Beautiful Hike; Can Be Hard for Those with Limited Mobility.
Oct 2019
My mom and I hiked out to the Saugerties Lighthouse on a lovely fall day. The views of the river and the lighthouse are worth the walk. Even though the trail is flat, it can be challenging for those with mobility issues. First, be careful of very slippery mud near the water line. (You can see the river from other vantage points along the path.) Also, as we got close to the lighthouse, the trail was not in good condition---very thick mud with a downed tree trunk and cat tails to climb over. It was a bit hard for my mom (with arthritis) to navigate, but we made it to this lovely spot in the end. The lighthouse was not open for visitors, but there are a number of interpretive panels around it. As we were leaving, another couple was stuck near the downed tree. Because she had had knee surgery on both knees, she was very fearful of falling. If I had not helped her get past that area, I think they would have turned around. So, be prepared to take a hiking pole and/or a friend. The park provides rain boots in various sizes if you need them. We found a port-a-potty right by the lighthouse, too.

Must do walk!
Oct 2019
Beautiful! Be sure look at tide charts for times to walk in as well as be aware they close the gates at sunset! When on the deck behind the house, you feel like you are standing at the prow of a ship as you watch the Hudson river flow past.

charming find on the Hudson river
Oct 2019
you can visit or stay overnight in this scenic and historic gem. Beautiful views of the river. This is about a half mile walk from the parking lot but it is a lovely, shaded path.

What a great surprise to find out about the lighthouse in Saugerties! It's a decent walk on a winding boardwalk through the bush and tidal marsh area.Make sure you go during low tide! There's a cool boot hut along the way if you get caught out. Striking scenery, views of the Hudson River. Worth the trek!

Nothing special
Sep 2019
It is an easy 15-20 minute walk as long as the tide is out. If the tide is in, it could be muddy - but there are boots available along the path just in case. Once out to the lighthouse, it's OK but nothing special. Tours are over for the, so you can't go inside. The views of the Hudson River are pleasant. Not a place I would return to as I have with other lighthouses.
