About Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome
2020 Airshow Season Cancelled. Shows will resume in 2021. Biplane rides available by appointment. The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is a true “living” museum of antique aviation located in the historic town of Rhinebeck, New York. We present one of the largest collections of early aeroplanes in the world, as well as automobiles, motorcycles, early engines and memorabilia spanning the period from 1900-1939. The Aerodrome offers four museum buildings housing static displays of aircraft from the pioneer, World War I and Lindbergh/barnstorming eras which are open to the public seven days a week from May to October.

We went here back before Trip Advisor existed! 1994! I'm now hoping to take our grandson there when they reopen for his first biplane ride.

No air shows this year due to COVID-19, but don't stay away just because of that. The Museum and the open hangars are incredibly interesting. What better way to see "state-of-the-art" technology from 100 years ago. Massive amounts of memorabilia and historic objects. Lots of info about the people who pioneered flying when flying was new, dangerous and unreliable. Nice gift shop and an interesting selection of books for sale. You can still schedule bi-plane rides. What fun. We wandered the hangars where work is being done, then sat by the air field and watched planes coming and going for weekend visits. What a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

The Aerodrome “museum” is 4 buildings which house many aircrafts and some cars from the early 1900’s (including a replica of the original Wright Brother’s first flight craft) to the planes used during WWII. The main building has a lovely chronological explanation of the development of the planes and the people who flew them. Unfortunately, there was no air show due to Covid, however, they are still offering biplane rides in an original 1929 plane!! Somehow I allowed my husband and 10 year old son to do it- with lots of reassurance from Stewart Sommerville, the airshow and events manager. So glad I did! They both said it was “the thrill of a lifetime” with incredible views of the mountains and Hudson River. Stewart knows the planes inside out and is a great source of information. I highly recommend the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome as a stop on your trip to Rhinebeck!

We were fortunate that during our week stay in Rhinebeck there was a day we had not booked up. The Aerodrome was advertised In the village so we drove a few minutes away by car to check it out. The afternoon turned out to be extraordinary. Biplanes and triplanes dating from the earliest days of aviation through WWI that are ordinarily only seen in photos or museums are flying right in front and above you. And not just flying-stunts and exhibitions of flying skills and the individual airplanes’ abilities too. All in a setting where you can imagine time is turned back 100+ years. A large grass runway in a woodland setting away from modern civilization. Accompanying are antique cars, trucks and motorcycles. Ancient hangers and related buildings. People in period costume help create the illusion. One of the most interesting three hours I’ve ever spent and for a very reasonable admission fee. The staff of the Aerodrome work hard to create a show and exhibition that held our attention every moment. And they succeeded. The genuine sights, sounds and feel of an era 100 years past. Check it out.
