Best hiking on Santiago: Lagoa and Gongon trails

Santiago does not compare to worldclass Santo Antao for hiking, but Serra Malagueta has some good trails. It is on the main road through the island, so you can easily come with a public aluguer, and then return or continue with another one after your walk. Small unmarked paths here (even through some were once major trails), unlike the well... More

I walked through Malagueta a few weeks ago. The weather was amazing as was the scenery and terrain. It's wonderfully diverse. The altitude changes so subtly that you don't realize just how high you are when you reach the peak. I was collecting some Biomechanics and Biometrics data and it was the most pleasant source ever. I'll be sure to... More

We walked down through the national park to Hortelao. Long descent through villages and some of the remote parts of Santiago. Beautiful scenery. Chatted (!) to some local families on the way down and it was fascinating to hear (through an interpreter) how they live. So remote that children cannot get to school. Some villages look almost empty whereas others... More

This is not a difficult walk, but there is quite a lot of descent ( we dropped about 3300 feet on our walk). We passed through deserted villages and saw a grey headed kingfisher on our way. It is a green and fertile area, and makes for pleasant scenery as you walk.

NIce tracks, great for getting to know the more rural side of Cape Verde and the hospitality of the cape-verdians. Great views!

great view, great people, and good place to eat, Serra de malagueta is in the mountains south of Tarrafal, but an exciting taxi ride from the centre takes you upto the cloud covered mountains.

Our visit to the visitor center and the map they gave us still didn't get us on the right trail, or at least we don't think it did. We had a lovely hike in Ribeira Principal and would do (the correct) hike all over again.

Please leave a day for it: the park is huge, when climbing up there are incredible views of the island and when you enter the range of the mountains you can enjoy plants.
