Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum...

Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum is one of the largest living history museums in the country. Located in small hamlet of Mumford, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) from Rochester, New York, USA. First opened to the public in 1976, the authentic 19th-century Historic Village features costumed historians breathing life into many of the 68 relocated and restored historic homes, farms, shops and other public buildings. When you visit during the regular season you will find various historic trades and craftspeople as well as historic cooking and agricultural demonstrations. GCV&M is also home to the John L. Wehle Art Gallery, the Genesee Country Nature Center, Silver Baseball Park, and several Heirloom Gardens. Numerous special events and classes are also offered throughout the year. Our regular open season runs from Mother's Day weekend through Columbus Day, with special programs in November, December and March.

First and for most, this place is zero percent handicap friendly. Pushing a wheelchair through the gravel was a nightmare. Not sure if the staff is all volunteers but they were all terrible!!! From the second we got there, until we left, it was one disaster after another. The cashier at the front entrance was extremely slow and hardly knew... More

We are truly sorry to hear that your recent visit was not an outstanding experience that the vast majority of our guests report having. A few of our departments are currently undergoing a transition from summer to fall staffing levels and some things may take just a bit longer at times as we work through the changeover. We appreciate your... More

Enjoyed what we were able to see. The trolley was not running so we could not do the whole museum and village. If I had knowen the trolley does not always run I would not have gone. This is not a friendly handicap place.

We are so sorry that you were disappointed during your recent visit, although happy to hear that you enjoyed what you were able to see. As mentioned on our map under the section "Need a Lift?", our trolley only runs select days and times and any guests needing special assistance getting from one place to another have only to ask... We visited yesterday (7/26/2016); a hot day so we were happy to arrive early and left mid afternoon. The village is absolutely wonderful and the staff in the various buildings are extremely knowledgeable and interesting to interact with. Love the costumes!!! We were curious about the youngsters walking around in costumes - they were part of GCV&M's summer program. We... More

Thank you so much for your comments. We are delighted to hear that you had such a pleasurable and engaging visit despite the hot weather we experienced this summer. Our costuming department has worked very hard on improving the authenticity of our period clothing in the past few years and we are glad it shows. We hope you will visit... More

The volunteers and staff that dwell within this collection of historical buildings create a fantastic atmosphere for guests. They are knowledgable, friendly and so patient with the children that come through, too. I've been here as a teacher on field trips, totally impressed with the way that huge groups of kids are handled, and for many visits with adult friends... More

Thank you for your compliments to our staff and volunteers. Decided to spend a Friday with our kids to explore the museum! It was amazing!!! My kids and us had a blast. They loved exploring all the houses and learning about how things used to be. There were a lot of interactive exhibits that showed the children how things were done. The staff was pleasant and very educated about what... More

We are so glad to hear about your visit and that your children begged to come again the next day. That is one of the greatest compliments we could ever receive! It's never too early to start learning about history and lifeways of the past. We hope you will listen to your children and visit us again often! :-) More

The Genesee County Village and Museum was our answer to how to entertain a 9 year old and a 3 year old all day. It sits in Mumford, about 25 minutes from Rochester, NY. We got there at 10:30am somewhat doubtful that we would be at the museum long, because it was a very hot day and kids attention span,... More

Every July they hold a Civil War re-enactment of two battles - one on open ground, and the other through the Village. It's exciting to watch, with cannons (minus the cannon balls) going off and live (without the bullets) rifle fire. The re-enactors are dedicated to the authenticity of the presentation, from the uniforms to the food they eat during... More

This museum is a must-see if you are in the Rochester/Finger Lakes area. We have been to many open air museums, containing old buildings, but we believe Genesee CV&M takes the price. Not because of the collection of buildings (although many of them are decidedly interesting), but because of the people that are populating some of the houses. These are... More

Genesee Country Village is one of my favorite places to visit, at any time of year, but the pancake breakfasts in March and early April herald the arrival of spring as faithfully as flocks of geese returning north.
