This incredible asset is wonderful. And woefully mismanaged by the Village of Greenport. Perhaps a non-profit or private enterprise could run this for them. It is very cool...when they open the doors.

Definitely drop by the Camera Obscura if you're in the area and have any interest in photography or the history of art. This is basically the predecessor of the camera and one of the first, really cool applications of the optical lens -- essentially a...More

Thie was a very interesting attraction to the Greenport area. However I do not believe it is open anymore. The past few several times we have walked down there it was closed. Do not know why they closed it.

Step into the past and see how early "periscope" type lenses were used. A quick and interesting experience located in Greenport, near the carousel.

My family of four was really looking forward to seeing this while in Greenport. It was broken and we couldn't get in!

the Camera Obscura is a great experience and teaching tool for kids. It is a simple pinhole camera projected by lenses and mirrors onto a table. The result is an amazing picture of the outside which is very realistic. Vermeer is said to have used...More

The Camera Obscura is one the coolest low/high tech things I've ever seen for it's age. The kids in the room with us were just enthralled. We had Gail Horton, the local Greenport historian show it to us and it was awesome!

I didn't really understand exactly what this thing was until I was standing in it. But basically, it is a darkened room with a small opening and the images from outside are projected inside through a lens. So you can stand inside and watch a...More
