For those who love museums and like to see work from their permanent collection that you ordinarily might not see, you will enjoy this small museum located right off the NY Turnpike in Upstate New York. The owner of Beech Nut company started collecting and created this museum. The highlight of the collection is paintings by Winslow Homer, but there... More

A Herkimer diamond isn't the only gem in the Mohawk Valley; another is the Arkell Museum. Always on exhibit is an authentic reproduction of Rembrandt's Night Watch. Today I saw the exhibit of Animals in Bronze...wow. Charles Russell's bronze of Will Rogers on his horse: terrific. There are horses and cattle and all sorts of lively critters. The animals in... I’m really torn about my rating of the Arkell Museum. I was looking forward to seeing a good chunk of Bartlett Arkell’s collection of paintings, but perhaps my timing was not good. It turned out that a large portion of the gallery space was dedicated to a history of the Beech-Nut company. Now, this was not a total downer (hey,... More

Very convenient to get to, just off the Canajoharie exit of the Thruway, this little gem of a museum has exhibits you would expect to find in a much greater institution. Fans of American art will be surprised to see that the art museum has works by Winslow Homer, William Chase, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Thomas Eakins, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart and... More

I cannot tell you how many times I have driven by this building while driving on the Thruway and saw the lovely building but had no idea it was a museum--it just says "Arkell". It was donated to the town by the owners of the Beechnut family. It is attached to the library which is a great idea. John Singer... More

Take advantage of this local treasure just off Exit 29 of the NYS Thruway. The museum houses a delightful collection of quality pieces one would not expect to find this far from the big city. It's definitely worth the stop and a good excuse to take a break from driving.

Canajoharie is the home of BeechNut gum, candies and food products. Arkell was one of the owners, and besides advertising BeechNut products with a traveling circus, he also was a discerning art collector. Map of the Mohawk Valley on a gallery floor, local library in other half of building. Spend an hour here.

I've been wanting to go to the Arkell for a long time as from the web site, it looks like a lovely modernist building with a great collection. I'm glad I was driving by as its quite small and had I made a specific trip, I would have been disappointed. The institution is a little odd as its both the... More
