This is the private museum of a founding Mesilla family (Mary Bird's!!!) who have lived in the region for generations. What a treat! For details refer back to the Jorden N TripAdvisor review (September 2105). You may need to phone ahead to make an appointment (575/526-6293). The museum is located two blocks east of the Mesilla old-town square. Mary's world... More

Our visit was actually in July of 1996. The original Mary gave us our tour. She was absolutely delightful and knowledgeable. The best part was she entertained and held my 13 y/o's attention for 5 hours. Pat Garret's gun, the bars that held Billy the Kid, stories of her historic grandparents. ... I hated for our visit to end. She... More

We never had any luck, trying four times over a two day period to visit the museum. It was always closed. No hours were posted or other signs except "closed." A local store owner said that we needed to call and get an appointment. The old homes and structures nearby were a welcome alternative.

If you have any interest in American history this is a can't miss opportunity to see a collection like no other. The mix is hodgepodge but fascinating. Mary leads you through with background on items. If you ask questions she will address every single thing, or she leads you through pointing out many with some facts, some legend.

There are numerous accounts of this museum listed on various sites on the web. I'd suggest disregarding them as this is a private museum that sets its own rules. They did not respond to several emails asking about availability. We walked by but it was closed on one of the days we thought it might be open. I'm glad some... More

Like others have mentioned in their reviews, this is a private museum of a founding family who have lived in the region for several generations. Although it has Gadsen in the title, there's not really much about Gadsen or the Gadsen Purchase in the museum. You are unlikely to just drive past and ever find the museum open. Instead, call... In addition to its enthralling collection from the history of the area, one of the special features of this local museum is it is generally only open by appointment, which means you will likely get a personalized tour by the curator.

First off let me set something straight if you read some of the other review. "Mary" the original founder is Dead but her daughter Mary now administers the museum and does the tours. The tour / the Museum is in a part of the Family home, on the original family home site. There are a wide variety of collectable items... More

A private collection from a family who has lived in the pueblo and in Mesilla for many generations. Some fascinating historic objects, but much that is just boring, weird and even in poor shape. The museum needs help! A few grants to catalog, properly display and light the museum would be a good start. Lighting is too poor to see... More

This is a must see for local families and friends. Much of the history of New Mexico is found here with personal family experiences expressed with love and pride. Call ahead for an appointment and you will not be disappointed.
