First Day HIke

We have a tradition of hiking on January 1st, which, thankfully, state parks across the country have also adopted. So while in Santa Fe we sought out such a hike, and were... read more

I went to the park during the weekday- the park office is open only from 2-4pm- Peter Lipscomb is the manager. The fee is 5 dollars for single day use vehicle. I hiked a few of the trails, views were very beautiful of the mountains. It was so quiet I could hear the black bird who flew above me -... More

The trails were scenic. For the most part the trails were narrow. We went by several old mines. It would have been helpful if there was more signage or blazes for the trails. When we first arrived, there was a ranger-led walk that the people seemed to be really enjoying. We chatted with the friendly ranger for a few minutes.... More

We have a tradition of hiking on January 1st, which, thankfully, state parks across the country have also adopted. So while in Santa Fe we sought out such a hike, and were directed to Cerrillos Hills SP. Let me say first off that they had absolutely the nicest and cleanest pit toilets I have ever used. The hike itself drew... More

Great scenery and a pleasant hike. Just make sure you have a hat and sunscreen as you will be out in the sun!

Easy hiking, some connecting trails are longer. Take the map, not that you would get seriously lost, but you could end up with an extra mile of hiking or so with a wrong turn. Gives a good overview of mining in the area, with many old mining sites from iron ore to silver. You get the idea that this was... More

Park was easy to find and trail maps were available at the trailhead. It being a state park, there is a $5 fee that you self-pay at the trailhead. There are hills, but nothing too strenuous so good for beginners. There was evidence of horseback riding on the trails. There is little-to-no shade so the sun was hot and intense... More

My neighbors and I have often visited the State Park here for hiking and even sometimes for horseback riding locally. It's a series of rolling hills with very easy hikes. Not a lot of steep inclines, so it's an easy way to see the old mining districts south of Santa Fe. The State Park has a very nice new office... More

Neat to see actual old silver and turquoise mines. The old shafts are gated off, but you can see where they were, and imagine what the prospecting life was like. Nearby Madrid has a museum with more info, and a row of miner's houses turned into shops, coffee houses, and craft beer joints.

This is a nice little state park that has trails leading to numerous old turquoise mines. The is a $5 entrance fee and the road goes about a mile or so before dead ending. There are several miles of trail that are mostly easy hikes. The visitor center is in the town of Cerrillos and has information on the area.... More
