One of the docents gave us a tour and answered all our questions. The Harvey Girls history is fascinating. Imagine single women in 1899 leaving home to live at a train station and serve train passengers, unheard of at the time. Strict rules kept it all on the up and up. The kitchen had 30 min to feed everyone before... More

The city of Belen has done a great job of preserving this Harvey House. The lady in charge gave us a great tour and we got a real feeling for how it operated. The Harvey Houses were an amazing well organized operation. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They told us some great stories about the Harvey Girls who worked... More

This Harvey House has more details than most. There are two floors with recreated living arrangements as they existed for the "Harvey Girls". It also includes various set up rooms as they would have been used it the rail road heydays. Really nice for the railroad enthusiast.

For years Harvey House was the standard for a good, well priced meal in restaurants mostly located at or near railroad stations. The meals were served by young women in black and white uniforms and they stayed in dormitories over the restaurant under the watchful eyes of a dorm-mother! This museum had uniforms, menus, place-settings and other memorabilia. Well worth... More

We stopped by in the morning because the AAA book stated they were opened at 9 am, but they don't open until noon. We wanted to see it, so we came back that afternoon and got a tour by the manager and Helga who were both great tour guides. Everything was very interesting from the mission style architecture, the way... More

Place is a bit out of the way, I'd like to give it higher marks, but it just feels static, though having said that, it's a wealth of information from our railroad past, one that included women who were treated more than fairly at the time.

We decided to stop by on the way north to Albuquerque because it sounded like it would be an interesting stop. I suggest that the first thing to do is watch the video which will give a very good overview of the Harvey House system and the reason he started the first chain of restaurants in the country. After we... More

Best thing to visit in Belen ! An excellent overview of the city history and railroading in New Mexico. Wonderful research library and the exhibits are first rate. And the food at the Becker St. Grill and Pete's across the street is great!
