Beautiful, but treacherous

BEWARE if you use John Claassens as your tour guide. He will charge you R1000 per person. The snacks that he speaks about for on the way were two little apples that he shares between 4 people. The water bottles are mineral H2O bottles but filled with tap water as he is too stingy to actually buy people proper bottle... More

Stunning valley, but make sure you factor in enough time. It really does take 2 hours to get down and 2 hours to get back! I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with small children. The small cafe/bar at the bottom is a welcome oasis!

This gravel road drive across the Swartberg mountains with magnificent views is a must do when in this region. One does require a vehicle with high ground clearance though. The small settlement of Die Hel has an interesting history. The camping ground is reasonable and so to the ablutions. The only restaurant in the tiny village is not the Ritz... More

The trip across part of the Swartberg Pass is astonishing. The majestic mountains and ever changing fauna and flora is amazing. To keep pushing forward along the barren mountain peaks and winding road, is not for the faint hearted. In places 2 cars cannot pass each other. With breathtaking views one gets ever closer to the valley below. On the... More

Don't try to get here without a good ground clearance on your vehicle, (preferably 4x4) good brakes and strong nerves! Use a low gear on the final descent or you may burn your brakes out! We stayed at Fontein Guest Farm, in a restored original Gamkaskloof cottage. Water was on tap (hot and cold) and it was fitted with a... More

Definitely one of the best and most scenic passes in SA!.. Second time on this pass, this time with my Wife on board, we both enjoyed the winding roads immensely and would recommend it to all adventure bikers and 4X4 enthusiasts, not a very technical route, just keep a look out for oncoming vehicles, a specially round the blind corners.

Expect spectacular scenery, steering wheel gripping roads and narrow passes. Gravel road all the way with sandy patches at some parts. I am not the most avid of 4x4 divers but you will need a car with sufficient ground clearance. I don't think a 2wheel drive sedan will quite make it unless its a rental. We did it in a... More

Not for comfort travelers. Heavy driving on dangerous mountain passes. Heaven for adventurers and nature lovers. Unbelievable scenery and vistas. Interesting history and unique. Guest cottages and camping

I did a round trip from Prince Albert to: Swartberg Pass, Oudtshoorn and back via Meirings Poort. A great experience.

The trip to Hel is more interesting than the destination. A unique drive and interesting history. An engineering feat in itself and with proximity to the Swartberg pass a destination not to be missed for road pass buffs.
