Lovely out of the way Estate Garden
May 2021
Cross Estate Gardens is a beautiful and peaceful oasis away from our crazy lives. My wife and I have visited the garden area twice this week and will be back later this month to witness more flowers and plants bloom. Thanks to those who tend this lovely oasis.

While I have learned that there is a great amount of history behind the estate I Love to go there to wander around the gardens. I enjoy taking photos of the different flowers. Great place to have wedding photos taken too.

These gardens, while small, are a testament to the New Jerseans’ love for their home state and their willingness to spend much time and effort to preserve its history and beauty—very enjoyable!

If you enjoy a beautiful soothing environment to reflect on natural beauty, this is a delightful way to spend some time. Besides the gardens, there are numberous hiking trails both at the Cross Estates as well as the nearby Jockey Hollow National Park. Washington wintered the Continental Army there and the whole area is steeped in history as well as beautiful forests.

It's Aroma therapy starting late spring and through summer.

The best thing about Cross Estate Gardens is the smell, the aroma, the awesome atmosphere of pure flower power. So before you go, take a shower and wash off all that perfume and musk you normally wear to let people know where you've been, and put on some of the scentless stuff so you actually will be able to smell the flowers. Then when you get to Cross Estate Gardens on a warm sunny summer afternoon, as you walk under the wisteria-covered pergola, just past the giant dawn redwood meta-sequoia tree, and into the garden jammed packed with plants, you will be enveloped by a most pleasant bouquet known to attract a Kaleidoscope of butterflies at the right time of year (or at least one or two moths). That is the main reason to go. If you do, you will be rewarded. If however you go expecting to see a neat garden filled with flowers all in bloom, it isn't that kind of garden. It's part Native (wild overgrown) garden, and part wild overgrown perennial garden which happens to be laid out in an English formal arrangement, in that it is surrounded by a low brick wall and broken up into a geometrical path configuration so you can wander around to see what is in bloom or will be soon. Of course the plants ignore the arrangement and reach out everywhere they can to touch the mountain air.

A hidden treasure

Like your own Sectet Garden. Hardly ever run into another person when visiting. They've greatly improved the Gardens over the last decade. You can also access Parltriots path and The National Park hiking from the parking lot. Shhh…Keep it secret…

There is an interesting old water tower and a formal garden. There were loads of flowers bloomin as well as an abundance of butterflies and bumble bees. It was a nice place to walk through.

Very peaceful any time of the year. Easy trails and lovely little gardens. Pleasant breezes being near the top of the hill. Going down to the stream is a nice walk in the countryside.

Take a walk though the gardens at any time of year for a unique visual treat. Foliage changes with the seasons, since NJ has Spring, Summer, WInter and Fall.

Visited the Cross Estate Gardens while staying in Bernardsville, was the highlight of the trip. Gardens are well kept and provide good photo opportunities. We really enjoyed walking the grounds. A recommend if you are in the area.
