We enjoyed walking around Portsmouth with a tour guide and without. The guide, Sharon, was full of information we never would have gleened by reading plaques on our own. She "brought us back" in time...very interesting. The tour is longer (almost 2 hours) so plan your day accordingly. We were headed to the Hampton Seafood festival so were pressed for... More

I have visited the Discover Portsmouth Center many times. The changing art exhibitions are always extensive and informative. The bookstore is large and offers a well-stocked introduction to Portsmouth history and culture. On Friday September 9, I also took a one hour late afternoon walking tour--which was one of the enjoyable walking tours I've ever taken.

The staff is wonderful and excited about their town. There is a great video to get the feel of the town, a nice gift selection, and plenty of informative guides.

Fantastic intro to this beautiful historic city. Guide Linda King was informative, friendly and funny! Perfect way to get bearings first time in town, and fit in a little exercise while doing it. Highly recommended. And you can't beat the price.....

Before our 1hr walking tour we saw a 15 min video about the history of Portsmouth. It was a great way to get an overview of the city and know where to focus the rest of our time while in the area. The walk is not strenuous and the guide is very friendly and willing to answer questions. The visitor... More

We stopped in to get a historic feel for portsmouth before touring some of the historic houses. We saw a quick 12 minute film which was interesting, but there were no historic exhibits or much info to pick up. I expected to see brochures of the many houses, info on the gundalow, etc. I hoped the black history section would... More

Sorry you missed our wall of rack cards for all of the historic houses, boat trips (including the Gundalow) and museums in Portsmouth. We also have a book called "Black Portsmouth" by historian Valerie Cunningham and a brochure about the African Burying Ground Memorial. Our historic museum, the John Paul Jones House, is right across the street from the welcome... More

We took the one hour walking tour in the morning as we did not have time for an afternoon tour. We began with a short film in the Discover Portsmouth center which was good background. Then we had about a 75 minute tour around the heart of downtown. Very interesting and worth the price by far. It does not go... More

I went on the discover Portsmouth walking tour and it was so awesome! Sharon was extremely considerate from the beginning of the tour asking if we had any time constraints as the tour does go about 1hr45min long. However as they say time flies as your having fun and being educated about the town Portsmouth at the same time! Sharon's... More

I thoroughly enjoyed a very informative walking tour of fascinating Portsmouth with historian Richard Candee. This gentleman was interesting, knowledgeable and willingly entertained all questions. The walk focused on the Brick Act of 1814. I look forward to returning to Portsmouth for additional walks. Thank you Richard.

A friend was having an exhibit of her work at the Discover Portsmouth bldg. Wendy Turner is a well-known painter in this area and had the whole exhibit area to display her work. We could not believe how beautiful her paintings are - quite a variety of subjects. Feel very happy we could experience this. I believe her show continues... More
