The Renaissance Bogenšperk Castle was built at the beginning of the sixteenth century by the Wagen family - who gave the castle its name - Wagensperg. The castle changed several owners before it was bought by Janez Vajkard Valvasor and his wife. Valvasor gradually turned the castle into a cultural and science centre boasting a print studio and a rich library. This golden period lasted until 1692.Bogenšperk castle is today a major Slovenian cultural landmark, with a museum based on the life and work of Janez Vajkard Valvasor. One can take a stroll trough the castle park, opt for a exercise on the castle track or enjoy at the castle inn Krčma.

We headed for Bogensperk from Ljubljana- in itself a lovely drive. We had checked on the website that the castle was open. It was but despite the lovely sunshine, we were the only visitors to the castle itself. As a consequence just be warned if you go off season, the cafe isn't open nor will you get a guided tour.... This historic castle is a few miles outside Litija, Slovenia. We participated in a tour led by a young man, obviously a history major or history graduate, who provided amazing details about the castle, and particularly its most famous inhabitant, Janez Valvasor (approx. 1667-1687). He wrote amazing scientific research books and important Slovenian history books including a review of all... More

Valvasor is a popular person in Slovenia. He travelled around in 17. Century and described all castles, towns and monasteries of Slovenia. He published books and lived and worked in Bogenšperk. He had huge library and a small printing office there. It is nice, rebuilt castle with some collections and good guides. It is possible to print your own piece... More

This features prominently in some travel guides, but appears not to get that many visitors. Nevertheless, it is well worth seeking out and visiting. A Renaissance castle built in the early 16th century, it contains a series of themed rooms on several floors: copper engraving & printing; folk costumes; former library; local history; natural history, etc. There may be guided... I'm visiting it occasionally since 1981. They are improving the offer and guiding. You can just visit a castle, have a drink or arrange to get married there, or talk to herb specialist or learn about Valvasor, a former owner who was honorary member of Royal Society in London (=Academy of science.) ..

Although this castle is more or less in the middle of nowhere, it is worth the drive. It is renovated and the are around the building is well kept. If you decide to go on a tour inside the castle (it is only 3€), it is very interesting that they unlock the door with giant iron key. Inside there is... More
