The Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge provides an opportunity to view a variety of waterfowl and other birds on the lake and in dryland habitats. There are a number of different locations for viewing and several drives that are open at various times during the year. There is also the possibility of seeing deer and occasionally a coyote or fox.

Made a detour to stop here for our picnic. Lovely peaceful location, as expected saw lots of birds and there's a small visitor centre with pleasant staff in. Had our picnic at the table near the lake but because of the proximity to water there's lots of midges. If birds and nature are your thing this is a great place... More

This place is for the birds. Bairds and grasshopper sparrows, quails, sandpipers, other waterfowl, longspurs, buntings, and so much more. The rolling plains were beautiful and the trip around the refuge was exquisite. I highly recommend this spot for anyone interested in nature. The naturalist on staff was very helpful and pointed out spots where we could find species we... More

We started early in the morning and were rewarded with owls as well as all manor of water fowl and grassland birds. Including many that are uncommon to rare elsewhere.

Several people had told me about medicine lake and I was not disappointed. I took the first right off of 16 coming from Sidney and immediately saw lots of bird species. I walked along the shoreline and took lots of pictures. I also walked up the hillside and caught a group of white Pelicans floating along the shoreline. Not many... More

Nice place to hunt. Decent cattails and reeds. Lots of mud and water. Make sure to hunt only in the sections open for the particular date you are there.

There is an orientation centre with brochures, etc. The bird sanctuary is quite large and has roads criss crossing it at intervals. Lots of swans and other waterfowl and pheasants in the dry areas. A very pretty place.

Medicine Lake is great for bird watching, especially waterfowl. It is most easily visited by car. One must be careful to go when the roads are dry since they can be too muddy or even closed due to high water.
