It is amazing to be able to see all of the history of St. Louis in one space. The burials here are of famous Missouri and St. Louis area businesspeople, government officials and other area leaders from all walks of life. Tour is about two hours but very comprehensive.

When the idea of touring a cemetery was first brought up I was a little hesitant, but curious. I have always been intrigued by the older graves and what or who the people might have been, whenever we visit a family site my daughter and I always gravitate to the older section. At Bellefontaine there are some amazing memorials, the... More

I'm going to state this right here - I love exploring old cemeteries. Bet lemme tell you that Bellefontaine is absolutely top notch. First of all, this cemetery is 100% friendly to visitors. You can get maps and handy little booklets right in the office by the main gate. But please, please buy the booklets ($5 well spent). They give... More

Bellefontaine is a classic, historical cemetery in a huge rolling field with 2 lakes and dense tree cover. When it was new this was a heavily used picnic area. The people buried here read like a list of St. Louis' VIPs. That means many dramatic tombs, including the world famous Wainwright tomb, designed by Louis Sullivan. Neighborhood is sketchy but... We made a quick stop here to visit William Clark's grave. The cenetery is large, but the staff was very helpful and made it easy for us to locate the marker.

Bellefontaine Cemetery will host its second annual Decoration Day event on Saturday, June 4th, 2016. This large-scale living history event will explore a 14 year period, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (otherwise known as the 1904 World’s Fair), and will feature reenactors from other historical events taking place up until the close of World War I in November of... Very helpful staff at the entrance. Take the cemetery map, follow the white line on the road, and markers will take you to various grave sites of interest, incl the one for William Clark. Beautiful setting and surroundings, well landscaped and maintained. Nice side trip from the hustle and bustle of St Louis and easy to find.

We came here after reading some reviews online. I'm so glad we did! Stop in at the visitor center and grab a free map. There are also ones like a Civil War guide, but those may cost. The tour is so well laid out. As you drive down a main road, you see markers that correspond with the entry on... More

While visiting St Louis, many might look over this "attraction" but if one loves history, one must make the time to schedule a tour.. The volunteers who give tours are dedicated to providing information not only about the cemetery but the beautiful plants and flowers of the arboretum. The history of St Louis is fascinating and Bellefontaine provides enhancement to... More

Who can be excited about a cemetery?? I was. Our tour guide was beyond super! Bellefontaine Cemetery is a wealth of St. Louis history, nature II arboretum (180 species of trees), 100+ above ground mausoleums, columbarium, obelisks, and "soap opera" stories of the deceased. This cemetery was founded in 1849. There are 87,000 plus souls and is only half full.... More
