Tallgrass prairies once covered more than a third of Missouri; today, less than one percent remains, much of it preserved at Prairie State Park. Visitors to the park see panoramic vistas of swaying grass and ever-changing wildflowers. They also may spot an elk or the park’s resident bison herd. The park’s visitor center offers exhibits and interpretive programs designed to inform visitors about the special place.

My wife and I stopped at the park to exercise a bit before continuing our car ride. The access roads have a lot of loose stone -- drive slowly to avoid extra dents to your car from stones that are thrown up by the car's...More

I took my family here over Memorial day weekend. They have a nice, small museum with some hands-on displays for small children. The ranger was friendly and helpful, but other than looking at hundreds of acres of prairie, dotted with distant bison, there was only...More

We went for the bison hike, hoping to see new calves, but the bison were uncooperative. We saw some of them from a considerable distance. There was an enormous variety of wildflowers coming up, but just a few were blooming in early May. I expect...More

We visited Prairie state Park today and walked probably 3-4 miles of their beautiful trails. It was magnificent. We saw bison but the highlight was the wonderful forbs that are just beginning. I wish we could be back again in about 2-3 weeks to see...More

We did 2 trails and saw several bison, a snake and many beautiful flowers. This park is a hidden gem! Bring bug spray and water to drink as it got hot even with the ever-present breeze.

Coupled with a visit to the nearby Osage Village State Historic Site, one really gets a sense of "what used to be" in southwest Missouri. I'm no Luddite, and I gratefully acknowledge the gifts of the Industrial Revolution and Western Civilization, but there is an...More

People may think there is nothing to see in the prairie but that is not so. Prairie flowers spring up everywhere, the sky is amazing, birds are abundant and the prairie goes on for miles. The bonus of this park is the bison herd. They...More
