This Cathedral was built in second half of 16 century by the order of Ivan the Terrible. Its exterior is very modest but proportions are perfect. Inside you can enjoy very impressive traditional 17 century fresco in quite good shape and 18 century icon-stand. Now there are prayer services and it is really great performance as acoustics in this cathedral... More

Light and indescribably elegant in its architectural simplicity, the St.Sofia church dominates city line with the silver cupola. It has been around for while. The architecture is fantastic. I don't like any religion, however, this place is well worth a visit. I really enjoyed looking round the site.

Gorgeous frescos (can be seen at: http://vologda-portal.ru/en/about_the_city/index.php?SECTION_ID=5475 click on 'tourist sights' and 'St Sophia' to get inside). One of the better preserved churches in Vologda. There is a fee to get in and it isn't normally open after October until spring as there is no heat. This is a must see when you are in Vologda.

....located inside the cathedral. The whole interior is covered with them. The lady put on some choral music when I entered and I felt as if I could imagine what the cathedral would be like during a divine liturgy. Well worth the visit.
