Site of the Battle of Birch Coulee, one of the hardest fought battles of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Visitors can tour the self-guided trails where markers explain the battle from Dakota and U.S. soldiers' perspectives. Birch Coulee Battlefield is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic site is open daily dawn to dusk between May and October.

The entire story of the battle, including the reason the battle occurred, are told through interpretive displays here. There are displays only. Restrooms are found in the adjoining county park.

I read the book "Dakota Dawn", so I looked forward to actually seeing The Birch Cooley Battlefield during our recent trip to New Ulm, MN. This historic site is not manned, but the signage around the battlefield provided an excellent overview of events that occurred....More

It was an interesting walk on the path with stops to read about the 36 hour battle. Nice park area also.

it was great bicycled and hiked the trails and biked to morton enjoyed all of the photo stories of the battle learned alot also went to nearby fort ridgley state park to learn more bout the battles fought in the indian wars

Very cool, interesting little park. Very pretty with the creek that runs through it and the picnic area was nice. Lots of history!
