Absolutely beautiful! Lots of wayside rests along Lake Superior to stop and watch rivers enter the lake, find agates along the shore, and picnic. Great hiking trails all up and down the "Drive." Many waterfalls reachable by foot within 1 mile of the lake.

You must take the scenic HWY 61 drive north of Duluth. It's a gorgeous and relaxing drive along Minnesota's North Shore.

Taking the county road 61 takes you through scenic views of Lake superior and there are a number of state parks along the north shore. We visited only Gooseberry falls state park which has a nice water falls and a shore area on Lake superior.

We drove from Duluth to Grand Marais and part way up the Gunflint Trail. You can't see the lake the whole way, but there are plenty of great views. We stopped at several places. Gooseberry Falls was awesome! Split Rock Lighthouse was neat, and worth...More

We drove from Duluth to Gooseberry Falls and had expected to drive more along the shore line of Lake Superior. However, the lake views are essentially blocked from view by the forests. We enjoyed our short stop at Two Harbors which was a larger town...More

The entire north shore is stunning. I go up there multiple times a year because I can't get enough. My favorite place is Grand Marais, but if you can't make it up that far, don't fret because even the very first place - Duluth -...More

Great road trip. Be sure to stop at Betty's Pies in Twin Harbors, the lighthouse there and the Chamber of Commerce Tourist info place. An absolute must is the Gooseberry Falls State Park. Falls are breathtaking. ADA accessible paths/trails. Another great stop is the Beaver...More

Lots in Duluth. You can also stay in any of the towns along the way. We stayed in Duluth but I did notice that there are hotels in Two Harbors including a bed and breakfast in a light house. I did not stay there but it seems... More
Please i would love some opinions . We are going to Duluth for 6 days over the 4 th of July however we only have one day for the scenic drive . I for sure want to go to grand Marais. So I'm thinking of going from Duluth to grand Marais early early (what time does the town open ? Businesses etc...) start there then come back towards Duluth stopping at all the spots we've chose . Wouldn't it be a good way to end up late where our room is and the other way around we're late driving back from grand Marais. ??? Please I appreciate any input !! I've read every review . We are going on a Sunday July 2 nd . So I know it's gonna be busy .

Wow, that's a really busy weekend and so I agree with getting an early start and checking in ASAP. Lake Superior creates it's own weather, so remain flexible and so you may need to delay one day. Also, no matter how hot... More
Crazy question, I am a bit whimpy driving on mountains and roads on the side of a cliff. This drive sounds so spectacular. Do I need to prepare my mind for this type of drive??

There are places where the road is next to the lake, but not very high up. The last cliff type areas were replaced with short tunnels many years ago. Minnesota is very good about using guard rails where needed, not at all... More
