The old State Hospital in Traverse City served the mentally ill from the late 1800's until the late 1980's. Several large old building were pretty much abandoned until a development team came in to turn them into mixed use (condo's, offices, shopping and restaurants). The tour focused on how the hospital operated, how patients were treated and allowed us a... More

We have been coming here for years to shop, buy coffee and eat at various places. We have hiked many of the trails but today we decided to take the official tour. THE TOUR IS A MUST DO EVENT!!!! Joe was our lively and very knowledgeable tour guide. You sign a waiver for a reason- you get to go into... More

I am a nurse and was very interested in this tour. My job partner went on the tour a year ago and said that the history of the state hospital was amazing and shared some of the stories. I found it was difficult to get facts from our tour guide, Dave. I also think some of the info was not... More

We went on the 2 hour tour of the state hospital. There was a lot of history in the tour and our guide, Joe, was actually a student in the area while the hospital was still operating. He was funny and shared memories about performing for the patients in the late 60's. I would definitely recommend it. This is NOT... More

I have been here before. This was a crisp November morning. We stopped got a coffee at Higher Grounds Trading. Really great coffee a unique take on to go cups. Went to the bakery and loaded up on baked goods. The chocolate croissant is extremely good, flakey and buttery handheld goodness. We walked around the grounds and stopped to pick... More

Be it food, or shopping this is one of my favorite places to go. They offer a little for everyone! Be sure to take the time to walk some of the trails and enjoy the pictures within the commons, take in the history of the grounds and take a deep breath, relax and enjoy.

Be sure to arrive by 10am-Saturday for the freshest fish, eggs, breads, baked goods. Save some room and stop by Black Star to taste appetizer and wine for purchase as well as shopping in the many artistian stores-each wall tells the store of asylum years ago-very beautiful-check it out.

This is such an interesting place to visit! The entire campus used to be the state mental hospital, but its been renovated for commercial use. There are some really beautiful shops located in the Mercado, and some great restaurants. There are several different buildings all over the campus, and many different bussiness. There is a great bakery, a few really... More

The Village at Grand Traverse is much larger than we anticipated when we set out to find. Use your GPS to find the place, it is not on the beaten path. Lots of shops with very nice art and jewelry to choose from. The prices were a tad high but the offerings were really high quality and interesting. The restaurants... More

Shopping, foodie, wine, beers and coffees. There is a bit of everything here. The best part are the grounds and the atmosphere. One can walk around the grounds across the manicured lawns, view rare tree species or simply watch the people and the abundance of wildlife and relax. There are miles of trails and paved walkways where you can enjoy... More
