The Hanka Homestead tells you a story of early Finnish immigrants in the Upper Peninsula. It's in the middle forest at the end of a dirt road. Worth a visit. Open Memorial Day - Labor Day.

This National Park Heritage Site lets one walk among the buildings a Finnish family built and lived for 70 years and learn about homestead requirements for those surviving Upper Michigan's harsh winters. The buildings and setting gave me a glimpse into the hardships of Finnish families that settled here. The site includes a sauna-smoke house, family home, cow and horse... More

An enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide made this a fascinating visit. We spent at least two hours with our guide touring this Finnish homestead and learning about the Hanka family, farming practices and tools, building styles, and the ongoing restoration. The homestead is located on its original site with many of the original furnishing and artifacts. There is a group of... More

Step into the past at the Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum! There's no place quite like this farm, restored in its original isolated setting (not moved from its historic landscape to bring it closer to the crowds). The details that made up the life of this Finnish farm family are what brings it close to the heart of any Yooper, or... More

While driving on US-41, we spot a brown historical sign for Hanka Homestead Heritage Site. So, we turn off the paved road and drive several miles down a dirt road which leads to a two-track road. At the dead-end there is an open area where the historic Homestead is located. This 40-acre homestead consists of eight buildings (house, barns and... More

I thought the homestead was closed for the season, but i reached the man who is the guide and he said "sure i will show you around. We did not realize the personal tour we would get, we must of spent 2 hours going in all the buildings, and talking about all the things in them. We were so amazed... More

Drive down a country road which turns into a dirt road which turns into a one-lane backwoods trail which opens into a meadow in which sits the Hanka Homestead. Our guide was wonderful. Grew up in the 50s on a farm down the road and knew the Hankas. We were there an hour and a half. No one else came... More
