Please be sure to tour the Subtiaba neighborhood. These are the indieginous of Nica. And the ones who built the city of Leon on the blood and backs of their ancestors. As hot as it was outside, the church on the inside is nice an cool. Wooden, dark but beautiful. It's off the beaten path because well, the indigenous haven't been treated so kindly. But they are ready to show off their neighborhood and wants visitors to know the real history of Leon. …

Pretty impressive for being made of wood and having survived so much history. Interior woodwork is carved and beautifully painted. Side altars are stunning examples of Latin american baroque style. Contrast this with the cathedral in Leon. It's a nice walk from Leon, a quick cab rise, or a bicitaxi.…

I made the mistake of visiting this place by myself (solo female) and was verbally harassed by every man outside of the church. The church doubles as the local food kitchen for the city's many homeless, which is admirable, but can be quite uncomfortable if visiting alone.
